if i am not mistaken, deferred money is still guaranteed money off that season’s payroll, so like it or not, basically the cubs signed pena to a 1 yr, 10 mil deal but it pays out as a 2 year, 10 mil deal. So Iin the cubs front office perspective, thy are on the hook for pena next year for 5 mil regardless.

and i maybe mistaken again, but i dont think deferred money is transferable. re: bobby bonilla and the mets.

I dont think Posada is adequate, i just think Pena is NO upgrade. You know kinda like the trade the bluegays just made? Everyone involved in that trade sucked so whats the point?

By DHing Carlos Pena, you take away half of the value he gives you in his Gold Glove caliber defense at first. The Yankees already have Mark Texieria at first base, so obviously Carlos wasn’t going to play there.

He would represent a reasonable upgrade in power at the DH spot, but trading for him only to then take away half of what he brings to the table seems a bit pointless.

That didn’t make any sense at all, this guy strikes out more than Posada and I haven’t looked but I’ll bet he has a lower batting average.

I agree with Harry. I think that Posada makes a completely inadequate DH, so I think that the Yankees should stick with him.

Shouldn’t the deferred $5 million to 2012 make it more likely that the Cubs would just let the Yankees have Pena? If the Cubs let Pena and his contract go, wouldn’t the Yanks be on the hook for at least part of that $5 million, thus taking money off the Cubs’ 2012 books?

Doesnt that mean that he was passed up by every team in the NL then passed up by every team in the AL before the yankees got a shot at him? And why does that matter?
