Assuming that DiMaggio missed 3 years of 145 games each, his career total might have been 2171 instead of 1736. It’s hard to see how DiMaggio would have played in more games than Mantle.

Hate to break it to you but Jeter surpassed Mantle at Sunday’s game with 2,402 games played as a Yankee. On Friday Derek tied Mantle. I’ve read this blog for a while but never felt the need to register and comment until this. It’s posted right on the Yankees website.

I find it kind of fascinating that given how many Yankee lifers there have been that a player Jeter’s age can set the record. (I associate longevity with being over 40.) It’s easy to forget the Babe starting in Boston (even though everyone knows that is the case), and easy to forget that DiMaggio could have been the longest running Yankee if not for WWII. And it’s always hard not to speculate about what could have been had the Mick been healthier.
