Indians demote Matt LaPorta to Triple-A

Aug 30, 2011, 4:46 PM EST

Matt LaPorta, Austin Kearns

Rosters expand from 25 to 40 tomorrow, but the Indians needed a spot for today’s starting pitcher, Jeanmar Gomez, and created one by optioning Matt LaPorta to Triple-A.

LaPorta will no doubt be back in September, but he’ll have to wait at least 10 days to rejoin the team unless someone is placed on the disabled list in the meantime.

LaPorta was the centerpiece of the package Cleveland got from Milwaukee for CC Sabathia and at the time the former No. 7 overall pick looked like a future middle-of-the-order impact bat, but he’s battled various injuries while hitting just .234 with a .694 OPS in 259 games for the Indians.

Question for you Aaron – I will be making my way to Target Field to see the Twins & Indians on Saturday, Sept. 17th (coming from Winnipeg, Manitoba) abd then the Vikings game the next day. Any suggestions on post-game restaurants and bars? Any readers familiar with the area please feel free to offer up ideas.

Dodger88 welcome to the Twin Cities,

Sneak Petes is a popular establishment. Also Smalley’s 87 club is good as well. Safe travels.

Pizza Luce Downtown on 4th street is a great post-game place and very close to Target Field. I (also from WPG) was there in July (also to see Cleveland) and saw Matt Capps a table over after an afternoon game, so it appears to be a popular place for ball players as well.

Dodger, did you go to an Indians-Reds game earlier this season in May?

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll be sure to check some out as I’ll be in the Twin Cities for three nights.

As for the Indians/Reds game in May, I was not there.
