The Indians are in a tough spot. If they pick up his option and he spends a big chunk of next year on the DL then they look inept. He's only an inexpensive power option if he plays and puts up the expected number. If they let him walk and he bounces back, he's only 28, then they look inept. Either way the risk of second guessing is huge. Trading him would likely not help because with his recent health issue your not getting anything worthwhile in return. And, there is the issue that if they pick up his option and has a good to great year it'll only cost them more to resign him for 2013.

They should be in the best position to make a determine if his health issues are unrelated or is it that he is the type of player that will break a lot, i.e. Eric Chavez. If I were making that decision I'd buy him out and try to resign him for less. The likelihood that he's getting 8.5 mil from another team is slim. It's quite possible that he'd walk but then so be it. If they can resign him to an production incentive laden contract then they might be able essentially buy low.

I've always liked Sizemore and have been disappointed that he hasn't been able to stay healthy. But, he is only 28 so it doesn't look like he's done yet but it also doesn't look like he'll be the star it was thought he'd once be.

If he does well the rest of the year, he'd almost certainly be more valuable to the team on his affordable option than he would if traded. With the injury risk, I can't imagine anyone would give up much for him. Also, if he's healthy next year (as unlikely as that is), he could be that power bat.
