Phillies activate Joe Blanton from DL for bullpen role

Sep 5, 2011, 5:03 PM EDT

Joe Blanton is back slightly earlier than expected, as the Phillies activated him from the disabled list following just one minor-league rehab outing.

Blanton has been out since mid-May with an elbow injury and won’t rejoin the rotation, instead filling a low-leverage bullpen role for now.

Blanton has made just five relief appearances in eight seasons, but had a 5.50 ERA in six starts before the DL stint and the Phillies obviously aren’t short on rotation depth. There’s a chance he could work his way into a middle relief spot for the playoffs.

Obviously, this is good news. God knows we need the extra arm in the bullpen with the late ineptitude of David Herndon. I am curious to see what he has left with his arm at this point in the year.

On a side note, I will be commenting on the big game tonight against Atlanta in this thread. Any Phillies fans interested in the discussion, check back during the Phillies game. This is a big series starting tonight. All discussion welcomed. The Good Doctor (drmonkeyarmy) normally does this, but I didn’t see him post yet.

  2. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 5:53 PM

    Yeah, I should be here.

  3. pkswally024 - Sep 5, 2011 at 5:53 PM

    HUGE GAME!

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 6:01 PM

Yes it is. It’s a huge series. Go Phillies!!!!

  4. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 5:58 PM

If the game is to be played, it will have to be in the rain.

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 6:01 PM

      Good Doctor,

I’m back here. This may be a 4:00 AM ending. I am prepared to go that far. I need to be in work tomorrow (I can’t work from home tomorrow, like I sometimes do), but I will use one of my call out days if need be. :)

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 6:04 PM

Can’t stay up that late. Pharmacy closed today (got Labor Day off in my last round of contract “negotiations”) but tomorrow will be super busy.

      • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 6:08 PM

Well, Doctor, let’s hope we can get this game in at a decent hour, then. I am looking forward to seeing Cliff dominate again like he has been. What’s the current weather conditions at the CBP? Is it raining hard?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 6:27 PM

Don’t know but it is raining pretty hard where I am.

      • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:02 PM

They are dry at the moment. We are starting this game on time.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:06 PM

Yeah, I was reading that they expect the really hard rain to stay slightly to the west.

  5. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:12 PM

So Lee looked good in the first inning. Where was that third pitch to Uggla? Looked to be an absolute strike. No worries though as Lee got him on the next pitch.

  6. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:14 PM

Interesting that Mayberry Jr. gets the start against the right handed Lowe. Also, it should be noted that the R-Phils and the Iron Pigs made their league playoffs. Ok, how was that a strike to Vic?

  7. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:21 PM

Phillies strike first with a base loaded single that scores two. I would like to point out that Howard had a good at bat. Yes, he walked on 4 pitches but he wasn’t flailing at them…he must be seeing the ball well.

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:26 PM

Very good at bat. Pence cashed in.

  8. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:31 PM

Ump not giving the inside pitch this evening apparently. Another solid inning by Lee. A quick aside: every time they show Worley in the dugout he is sitting next to that same Asian fellow. Anybody with any idea on who he is and what his function is within the team?

  9. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:33 PM

Ok, they are talking about twitter and sending questions to the booth. What the hell is a hashtag?

    • Francisco (FC) - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:42 PM

      Pound symol? #

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:46 PM

I don’t understand what that means. I don’t know what a hashtag is in general.

      • Francisco (FC) - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:49 PM

        # = hashtag

My guess is put your question with a hashtag remark in twitter directed at them. Maybe something like: #Phillies #booth

        Unsure.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:51 PM

I know nothing about twitter. So, you are saying that you direct comments toward people by putting the # symbol then some comment?

      • Francisco (FC) - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:16 PM

Actually to direct them at someone you would use the @ symbol. In my case @fcolmenares. But since you could receive texts from anybody, they use the hashtag to filter out topics You may be using twitter to tweet about the Phillies so you might put #Phillies in it.

  10. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:47 PM

Now they call the inside pitch a strike…consistency please.

  11. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 7:58 PM

    Lee dealing early.

  12. halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:06 PM

Sorry guys. I had to attend to the grill and clean up. I have been watching/listening between trips to the outside. I’m here. What happened?

    • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:11 PM

Mayberry walk, Gonzalez error, Martinez bunts to 2nd and 3rd, Lee ground out, Vicotrino 2 run single, Victorino out at home after trying to score from second on a wild pitch. He was running on the play but a bad decision. He also looked to dance around the tag, but still a bad decision. Lee pitching well thus far. 4-0 Phillies.

  13. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:08 PM

Huge 2 out hit by Victorino. Kind of poor play by the 3rd baseman Prado.

  14. halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:08 PM

    Beautiful, Chooch. Beautiful.

    • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:20 PM

Just found the game on Peachtree. Do the announcers always leave so much dead air or are they making some sort of special effort?

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:22 PM

Utley may have a bad knee but he can still get around the bases.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:23 PM

Usually they are jabbering away. Wait until Wheels comes back in the 7th inning.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:24 PM

I saw your Beavermen came through with a 1-0 extra inning victory today.

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:30 PM

Brett Lawrie is a baseball god. He will howrver be “hit by an errant pitch” tomorrow. Homerun sprint with tongue hanging out followed by a Kendreys Morlales type leap onto the plate HAS to be more egregious than some hand clapping, right?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:38 PM

Didn’t see it….but Cervalli in general has to be way more obnoxious than Lowrie. Cervalli’s hand claps aren’t limited to HR when behind the plate.

      • Francisco (FC) - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:49 PM

Usually they are jabbering away. Wait until Wheels comes back in the 7th inning.

Doc, he said Peachtree, that means he’s tuning into the Braves feed.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:52 PM

Oh. Why is that? And what is Peachtree? I am showing off my general lack of internet/computing knowledge this evening.

  15. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:15 PM

That was a hell of a catch by Howard. He has made a couple plays like that this year but that was the best of the bunch.

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:18 PM

It was a great catch. He’s turning into the Willie Mays at 1st with those plays, Good Doctor!!!!

  16. halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:17 PM

Cliff Lee is beautiful so far.

  17. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:22 PM

So Utley looks pretty good today. Hit all 3 balls hard. Knee looked just fine on that triple as well. With that intentional walk, what Howard has been on base 8 of last 9 plate appearances?

    • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:24 PM

That overrated guy sure hits a lot of balls into play.

  18. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:28 PM

The crowd is until this game tonight. Lets see if Lee can get a big 2 out hit here.

    • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:29 PM

into not until. shit editing on my part.

    • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:31 PM

      Pitcher’s batting, ugh. Where’s your DH! ;)

      • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:37 PM

Hey, Cur. Thanks to you and the Good Doctor, I commented today, just at a later time (i appreciate the backing in that earlier thread. I remember. I will never forget, just like the good doctor). How are you, my friend? All is great for the fightin Phils and the Holy One, who is not pitching tonight. We have to settle for Cliff Lee. LOL!!!!

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:47 PM

Hey HB. FYI I’m sorta seeing a ‘cow girl’ type. She was reading that over my shoulder this AM. I HAD to say something supportive of the genre or suffer the wrath, if you know what I mean. Crisis averted though.

      • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:53 PM

Cur, I just really appreciate it. I’m not a bad guy. I have my opinions. Sorry if these guys don’t like my approach or demeanor, but it is what it is. Notice I don’t insult fellow commenters anymore. Now I get crucified for insulting authors of articles. What’s next? I can’t give my opinion on anything?

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:09 PM

Ahh, hell, don’t worry about it too much. Look, as a rule, insulting CBJW is easy. Leave any and all male/female stuff out and NO ONE has a problem. I were you I’d just ignore certain people. That guy with the similar handle as yours is probably the same guy goading Fiorentino as his rash & mini-curr trying to goad me with the semi-gay Bautista comments. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery my friend. It’s a nod to your presence on HBT to even HAVE a personal troll.

Did Mr.Lucky just hit another bomb while I was typing this or am only imagining his delusions of adequacy?

  19. halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:38 PM

15 in a row retired by Cliff Lee. He looks great on the mound!

    • drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:54 PM

Yeah, Lee is dealing tonight. Hopefully he can go 9 tonight and give the bullpen a day off. I know that they are bolstered by the returns of Blanton and KK but I’d sooner not see any of them this evening.

  20. halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:49 PM

There was no reason to send a non-runner in Polanco from third. None. 7 run lead.

  21. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:57 PM

I’m telling you, Howard is dialed in. All of a sudden he is seeing the ball well. The past two days he hasn’t been swinging at bad pitches and hitting rockets when he does swing.

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:00 PM

      He’s pissed. See below note.

  22. halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 8:59 PM

The Phillies are pissed!!! Mr. Luck hits a bumb to make it 8-0.

Larry Jones, what was that again? You are not scared of the Phillies?

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:02 PM

Edit Function!!!!!! Mr. Lucky and hit a bomb.

      • Francisco (FC) - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:05 PM

Yeah he’s so lucky. I mean he’s only like the 12th guy in Baseball History to have 6 seasons of 30+ HR in his first 8 (which is rarer than hitting 3.000 hits). Howard sure is lucky.

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:08 PM

Welcome, FC. Exactly. I wish Chris F. would join the conversation (we will see him tomorrow). Yeah, Ryan Howard is awesome and Cliff Lee is dealing tonight. We have to love it. I know I do!

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:11 PM

Chris is probably at the game, lucky devil. Look for a guy in short sleeves freezing his ass off in the rain. That’ll be Chris.

      • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:17 PM

        cur,

As much as I love Roy Halladay, if Cliff Lee throws another shutout, which would be his 6th, with an ERA of 2.49 and a WHIP of 1.04, he’s the CY Young award winner. Do you agree?

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:39 PM

Ooof. You want me to pick another pitcher over Harry LeRoy Halladay III? Jeez man. I dunno. Lets look at the basic numbers, then,
Harry LeRoy Halladay III: 16 -5, 2.49 ERA, 7 complete games, 0 shut outs, 195 strike outs, 0.4 HR/9. Damn good. Cyborg good.

Clifton Phifer Lee : 16 – 7 (I didn’t think Larry was going to do something improbable like hitting a 9 run homer; Clifton Phifer wins), 6 CGs, 6 shut outs, 198 strike outs, 0.7 HR/9. Also damn good. Nexus 6 good.

Too close to call as logical statement, man, but I gotta go with my boy Roy. Only because he learned to do that kind of thing while throwing baseballs in Beaver Land.

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:50 PM

forgot: Clifton Phifer has a 2.59 ERA. Still, very good. Still taking Doc for the Cy Young.

      • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:54 PM

        cur,

I love Roy Halladay to the nth degree. I think he is the best pitcher in baseball. But, he never threw 6 shoutouts in a season. This Lee is fricking great!!! That has to mean something.

      • cur68 - Sep 5, 2011 at 10:10 PM

This Lee is great. The whole rotation is pretty awesome. I and many others have been saying all season long, this is the team to beat. Trying to choose between Lee & Halladay though is going to break down on “who you like more”. Those 6 – 0 shut outs for Lee is pretty good and will likely see him taking the Cy Young but I reckon the the Cy Young will be decided between the 2 of them and voting for Halladay will be not seen as an injustice. He does have better numbers in other categories and if you get sabermatricians parsing the data (BABIP and all that) those shut outs might not be as significant as you think.

  23. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:23 PM

And the phans are mocking the tomahawk chop.

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:28 PM

However I loath this, it is what it is. The Phillies made a statement tonight.

  24. drmonkeyarmy - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:31 PM

So yeah, Cliff Lee was ridiculously awesome tonight.

    • halladaysbiceps - Sep 5, 2011 at 9:36 PM

If he stays consistent with the remainding games, he is the CY Yound award winner.

Not that I care. I only care about team wins. But, this is a truth.
