Terry Francona on J.D. Drew’s return date: “We don’t know”

J.D. Drew was supposed to come off the disabled list when rosters expanded on September 1, but instead he sprained his finger while on a minor-league rehab assignment for a shoulder injury.

While doing a radio interview on WEEI this afternoon Terry Francona was asked about Drew’s return timetable and replied:

We don’t know. He tried to throw yesterday and that didn’t go real well. And he hasn’t attempted to swing yet, so he’s probably not on the horizon. And we haven’t had him for a while now.

July 19, to be exact. Josh Reddick has been in a prolonged slump, potentially opening the door for Drew to reclaim regular playing time in right field, but the injury setback combined with Reddick collecting seven hits in his last three games now makes that unlikely.

Who cares? They are better off with Reddick.

Did he ever return? No he never returned and his fate is still unlearned. He may reside forever on the DL of Boston. He is the man who never returned.

I get the impression that many of you have never heard the famous old Boston song “The MTA”.

What an enigma this guy is.

He has single-handedly carried the Sox with his offense on several occasions over the past few years. There is, of course, the ALCS GRAND SLAM of ’07, which cemented Boston’s rally over the Indians after being down 3 games to 1.

Great fielder, good base-runner, sweet swing…but there’s something missing. He’s a professional, understated guy who lacks real passion.

Reddick’s got a .994 OPS over the last 14 days, so I’m not sure it’s fair to say he’s still in a prolonged slump.
