It used to be that teams in the A’s situation were called spoilers. They played for pride, or perhaps their jobs in the following year, and gave their fans some pleasure in playing tough against playoff bound opposition.

The A’s did manage a lone win against the Rangers in this series on Friday. But yesterday’s game was one of those roll-over-play-dead horror shows that makes you pray that Beane will take his act to the Cubs. For years we fans heard about the A’s strategy of stockpiling pitching, that with pitching and defense good things would surely come. Five A’s pitchers surrendered 16 hits and 5 walks. Two errors did not contribute to any unearned runs, but there should have been a third on Sizemore’s double clutch allowing Gentry to reach first on a ball hit directly to the converted 3B.

The A’s rank 29th in team fielding, and have slipped from 3rd midway through the season to 11th currently in pitching. They are, of course, 25th in team offense.

Now that they have been officially eliminated, as Craig points out, maybe they can at least play with some degree of pride versus the Angels. Maybe.

The Phillies are totally Rocky still. They’re just “Rocky 3″ Rocky. They’re Rocky after he gets beat by Clubber and Mickey dies after being pushed by Clubber. Ya know, the ” You just know he can’t be beaten now that Mickey died and Lang’s a$$ is grass because of this cool “Eye of the Tiger” tune that keeps playing” Rocky. That’s what they are now.

If Boston’s pitching doesn’t get healthy, I’d rather face them than the Rays. I called TB for the WC over Boston in the pre-season, and that’s when I thought Boston had a rotation. I feel some shame for not sticking with the pick throughout the year.

Also, at the time it appeared that Jeter was finished as an effective regular, so a career retrospective seemed more appropriate. The Sandman unit is still only suffering from minor periodic glitches.

Jeter’s the kind of guy who is very cognizant of his historical standing, so I think he makes more sense allowing what happened than Mo does. Also, do you really think the DJ3K documentary happens without his approval?

HMS Dreadnought, the original battleship of the dreadnought class was commissioned in 1906 (not the 1st British ship of that name). There are a couple of books about that era and the great naval expansion into battleships by Robert K Massie: Dreadnought, and Castles of Steel. Good reading, if you’re interested.

Well, my prediction of a Brewers sweep by the Phillies didn’t happen. I guess I will have to settle for the Phils taking 3 out of 4. It hard for the Phillies with the Orr and Martinez’ of the world in their lineup to score 5 runs every day. It just isn’t happening. Worley pitched well enough to win, and the Phillies had their chance at the end with runners on base, but they just couldn’t come through.

What really angered me in yesterday’s game was what the punk Nyjel Morgan did. He hit an RBI double late in the game, reached 2nd base, and started flapping and waving his arms like he wanted to try and fly out of the stadium. He was also thrusting his chest out like he hit a game winning homer in the 7th game of the World Series. What a punk! Then they showed Manuel and Phillies hitting coach Pete Mackanin shaking their heads in disgust by his antics in the dugout. Win or lose yesterday, I was hoping the game could have gone into extra innings so one of the Phillies could have drilled him in the leg for that crap.

Besides the AL West, the division races aren’t very close so I think people are stretching hoping for some sort of drama with wild cards just because things aren’t too interesting right now with the races.

The Rays BABIP finally caught up to them. They were ridiculously unlucky earlier this season. They also just called up Matt Moore, although I have no idea what role he will fill. Closer I suppose. I feel very confident in saying F&$% Baseball Prospectus’ chances that they give the Rays. The Rays will be in the playoffs, and the Red Sox will not. One team is on fire, the other is terrible.

So why aren’t we seeing a big Mariano 600 countdown? Or an even bigger countdown as he’s like three games from taking the all-time lead in saves. Let’s ignore the dubious merit of the save stat for the moment. And focus on how utterly great he is, how important he’s been to his team, and how he deserves the same kind of treatment as Jeter.

This seems like a no-brainer for the Yankees press office. And yet it’s barely gotten any coverage even here. How odd.
