Time to panic is over, Red Sox Nation: Joey Gathright is on the way

Sep 12, 2011, 7:24 PM EDT

Joey Gathright AP

I guess that’s a cheap shot at Gathright. Didn’t really mean it that way. I’m really just trying to mess with that slice of Red Sox fans who won’t calm down unless or until zombie Ted Williams is signed to play left field and, just to be safe, the Rays decide to forfeit the rest of their games for the season.

But the callup of Gathright is notable anyway. Guy hasn’t played in the bigs since 2009 and started the season in independent ball.  And not just any independent ball team: he played for the Jose Canseco-managed Yuma Scorpions.

The speedy Gathright will likely be a pinch runner while the rosters are big. It’s hard to see where he’d fit on the team once the playoffs started and the Sox were down to 25 guys.

Assuming the Sox make the playoffs anyway. (buwhahahahahah!)

    1) Why pick on a dead horse Craig? 2) Don’t your kids need help with their homework?

The Rays have taken an early lead against Baltimore. If they win, there is more pressure on the Sox.

5-2 in the 8th. BJ just struck out to end a 6 consecutive hit steak. Throw in 3 walks, and he had reached base in 9 straight appearances.

Ted is still frozen at Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Scottsdale so there is still hope.

But it is only his head that is frozen – wait, he’d have a 1.000 OBP because he has no strike zone. Then Gathright could run for him. Move over, Eddie Gaedel!

Aviles, their current pinch runner option, got picked off yesterday, and made another baserunning mistake vs the Rays this weekend.

They’re in panic mode, and the Rays are coming after them.

I don’t think zombie Ted Williams can play without a head…

    • Glenn - Sep 12, 2011 at 10:55 PM

All that is left is the head, the body is gone. It is a travesty that my all-time favorite player lies in this bizarre state.

Game over and the Red Sox lead is down to 3 games.

gathright would be a nice weapon off the bench late in the game as a pinch runner, not much else though

I’d be stoked if the Sox blew the wildcard. That 4 game series with TB is gonna be a fun one to watch

Good for Joey, I went to high school with him.

    Stand up Bonnabel Bruins!

I don’t think he’s eligible for the postseason. He wasn’t on the roster before September 1st.
