We’ll never know what might have happened if MLB had a sensible replay challenge system and that game had gone to the 20th. Thanks Bud for continuing to prevent the implementation of a method to protect the integrity of the game. Sorry Pittsburgh.

they may not have a winning record this year, but they looked better while losing! I think they have hope for next year.

Good point, and especially those Pirate fans under 30 years old, who only remember the three consecutive NL East division winners of 1990-92. It must be extremely difficult to maintain loyalty, especially since 1997 was the last season of contention.

It’s definitely easier for older Pirate fans to keep the faith, since they have strong memories of the world championships, division titles, and outstanding players of the past.

Reality just caught up to the Pirates, who won only 57 games in 2010. Injuries also played a role in the disappointing play beginning in August, the club was forced to use seven catchers this season. At least for the first time since 1997, the club was a serious playoff contender after the All-Star break. Bottom line, there has been real progress this season, both on and off the field, but much work remains. The good news was the increased attendance in 2011, and this is still a storied franchise with a gorgeous stadium in a division without a dominant payroll team.

Another club with a winning tradition, the Orioles, aren’t far behind with 14 straight losing seasons.

I admire Pirates fans for keeping strong through all the losing years. I’d have to say they are the definition of true fans.
