HBT Daily: How screwed are the Red Sox?

Sep 19, 2011, 5:31 PM EDT

Tiffany and I taped this before today's loss, but on some level, I think we knew it was going to be a loss before it happened.

“How screwed are the Red Sox?” VERY!

    • Francisco (FC) - Sep 19, 2011 at 5:53 PM

Let’s put it this way, Imagine the Red Sox are this visibly tipsy guy at a bar who’s had a few too many, now imagine the Orioles are this unethical bartender who’s had his bar messed up several times by this disruptive lifer sitting in front of him. Now the bartender is reaching for the orange juice and the vodka…

For some reason, in this story I see a guy in a bathrobe, looks like Megamind, but with glasses, sitting at a table, bubbles gathering over his head, a smirk on his face. You can’t see his eyes; the reflection from the neon Coors sign renders them opaque. It’s like he doesn’t even have eyes, just two gleaming oblongs on his face like an insect. It’s like he knows what’s going to happen next…

Craig will throw a fit when he sees the commercial preceding HBT Daily is a NFL commercial.

So, since the media is all about the Red Sox tanking right now, what happens when they make the playoffs? Will all the articles on how the Rays tanked be written?

    • juniorbarnes - Sep 19, 2011 at 6:28 PM

If (big if) the Sox pull it off, the press will still be all about how bad they struggled in September. The fact is the Rays cant tank even if they don’t pull this off. This is a team that lost Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, traded Jason Bartlett and Matt Garza and let their entire bullpen walk, including Soriano. Who did the replace these men with? Farnsworth, Damon and Manny. Jury is still out on Farnsworth, Damon is proving he is Canton worthy and no comment on the last idiot. This is a team that the world felt would be LUCKY to win 60 games. Before the season started, I figured this would be the year that tells us if Joe Madden is truly the best skipper in baseball. When this team went 0 and 6 to start the season, I almost believed the media. But as the season rolled on and the wins kept piling up, I realized two things: there is life after Manny (just kidding!) and Joe is THE BEST SKIPPER in the game today. BAR NONE. So I do believe the Rays are peaking at the best possible time, and they will take the wild card en route to their second AL title in 3 years.

I agree that the Rays have amazed me this year but taking nothing away from farnsworth and damon….the reason why the Rays have always been in contention is their pitching!

Shields, Hellickson, Niemann, Price and Davis…easily one of the top two or three rotations in baseball.

I think the Rays will be much more intimidating in the playoffs than the Red Sox and their beleagured pitching staff.

Damon is not worthy of Canton let alone Cooperstown… never voted in the top 13 of MVP voting in any year! Stats mean something but the Hall is for the best of his generation and Damon has never even been considered in the Top 10 in any of his seasons!!!

      • marshmallowsnake - Sep 19, 2011 at 8:09 PM

I only gave you a thumbs down because the NFL Hall of Fame is in Canton and Baseball is Cooperstown.

    • aceshigh11 - Sep 19, 2011 at 10:13 PM

I still think it’s more likely than not they will pull it out by a squeaker…

…but the collapse meme is still operational, considering the position they started from.

Not to mention that these guys are not long for the playoffs even if they do make it in.

Lackey is pitching like Lackey in the second game of the double header.

    • proudlycanadian - Sep 19, 2011 at 7:52 PM

Matuz is worse than Lackey. This could be a high scoring game.

  5. aceshigh11 - Sep 19, 2011 at 10:11 PM

Oh, they’re beyond screwed. The season is basically over.

They’ve scored 11 runs tonight, and the effin’ Orioles have scored 9! They can’t even put the Orioles away with 11 runs!

C’MON! Their pitching is completely FUBAR. This is not a playoff-caliber team.

      Wonder if 18 is enough…

Didnt Craig predict boston to win the AL east?

    • pisano - Sep 19, 2011 at 11:41 PM

He wasn’t the only one to give the Sox not only the AL East, but many crowned them World Series champs. This is why they play 162 games, there are no write in’s.
