Someone stole the glasses off Ernie Harwell’s statue in Detroit

Harwell Statue Vandalized Baseball

If they ever find this person, I vote for multiple death penalties:

Someone has stolen a pair of glasses off a statue of late Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell that stands at Comerica Park in Detroit. Columnist Neal Rubin with The Detroit News reports that the team noticed the vandalism in July and a new pair should be in place by Thursday’s game.

It’s unclear exactly how — or when — the glasses were taken. The Tigers notified artist Omri Amrany, who oversaw the statue of Harwell, about the theft. Amrany says the glasses are being cast at a foundry in Kalamazoo and will be attached by either a foundry worker or sculptor Lou Cella, who created the piece.

Seriously.

I know the economy is bad in Detroit but this is ridiculous.

    .
Were they just sitting on the statue? Invitation to vandals, should be welded on.

The thief will most likely be found, I’m sure there was some security cam trained on that spot. It’s astonishing how much of the world is on camera. I just read a slashdot piece the other day that quotes Atlanta officials saying their goal is to have every inch of their city on camera, within a couple of years from now. I’m not making any call on whether this is a good, bad, or indifferent thing; it’s just a reality, and not just in America. The Brits are actually ahead of us on this: you can’t take a step in London without being on cam.

New glasses have now been welded on now.

Frankly, the statue still looks like Ernie did without the glasses. Ernie must have had lasik or similar eye surgery late in his life and didn’t usually wear eyeglasses his last few years.
