No one traded at this point in the season is eligible for the playoffs, but that apparently didn’t stop the Red Sox from calling the Mets in search of rotation help. According to John Thomase of the Boston Herald the Red Sox wanted to acquire veteran left-hander Chris Capuano in time to make Sunday’s start…

Earlier this week Lance Berkman said that it was all about the money. So the Cardinals came through with the money: they’ve agreed to a one-year deal. The terms have not been disclosed, but some people are tweeting around that it’s a $12 million deal. We’ll update if and when that number is confirmed. Which…

I’d say there were approximately 50 questions on the theme of “why do the Braves suck?” Please forgive me for not answering them all. Q: Why do the Braves suck? Because we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us.…

Nationals rookie Wilson Ramos is in rarefied air among young catchers
Sep 22, 2011, 11:51 AM EDT
Wilson Ramos went 3-for-3 with a homer last night and is now hitting .267 with a .331 on-base percentage and .443 slugging percentage in 109 games for the Nationals. Those certainly aren’t jaw-dropping raw numbers, but Ramos’ production adds up to an adjusted OPS+ of 112 and that’s damn impressive for a 23-year-old rookie catcher.…

Jair Jurrjens still unlikely for playoffs despite “really good” bullpen session
Sep 22, 2011, 10:47 AM EDT
Jair Jurrjens has already been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs because of ongoing knee problems, but the rehabbing right-hander threw a 50-pitch bullpen session yesterday. Jurrjens said afterward that “it went really good,” but Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that he’s “questionable” at best…

Sep 22, 2011, 10:30 AM EDT
We haven’t heard much about Chuck Knoblauch in the nine years since he retired from baseball. He was named in the Mitchell Report and had to testify in front of a grand jury about it, but otherwise, he’s been an invisible man. Today there’s a feature story on him in the Star-Tribune. It’s not the…

Lawyer says that Jim Crane is no war profiteer. Not that it really helps.
Sep 22, 2011, 10:00 AM EDT
Look, I have no idea why Major League Baseball is dragging its feet on approving Jim Crane as the next owner of the Astros. Maybe it’s that “I don’t want to move to the American League” thing. Maybe it’s because of the long and rich history between Crane’s company and the EEOC. Maybe it’s because…

Gentlemen, change your narratives: the Red Sox collapse/Rays surge story is kinda stale, what with the Rays’ surge being arrested of late. Now you gotta figure in the Angels who are tied with Tampa Bay, a mere two and a half back of Boston. On September 2nd, Boston was nine games ahead of Tampa Bay and…

Earlier today, we found out that Manny Ramirez intends to follow through with his plans to play winter ball in his native Dominican Republic. Now we find out it’s probably not going to happen after all. According to ESPN.com, Ramirez will have to drop his plans because of his suspension for failing a drug test…

The Rays suffered 4-2 defeats in both halves of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Yankees, dropping a half-game in the AL Wild Card standings despite the Red Sox’ 6-4 loss to the Orioles. Well aware that another loss could sink the Rays’ chances of overtaking Boston by the end of the regular season, Rays manager Joe…
