Photo of Miami Marlins cap suggests leaked logo is legit

Sep 24, 2011, 7:18 PM EDT

Remember that mocked-up Miami Marlins logo that leaked onto an internet message board earlier this week? The one that everyone panned? Turns out it’s probably legit.

From Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel comes the below photo of a New Era cap bearing the same graphic and rainbow-esque color scheme.

The Marlins could always back away from the look if the reception remains sour. And maybe it will change once the full uniforms are revealed. But that’s one ugly baseball hat…

I like the new logo. It isn’t wild looking. It’s quite normal.

    • prionogenic - Sep 25, 2011 at 12:53 PM

I don’t understand all the thumbs down, this was clearly meant to be taken as sarcasm!

  2. proudlycanadian - Sep 24, 2011 at 7:34 PM

I would have been more impressed if it had looked like an old gator.

    • Old Gator - Sep 24, 2011 at 10:15 PM

Let me tell you a true story. About, oh, thirty two years ago or so, the Broward County (i.e., Fort Lauderdale, a small city in the southeastern US just north of the international border with Macondo) director of tourism toured the Vatican in, and was photographed while wearing, his Ollie the Alligator bureau of tourism mascot suit. He took photos of himself in the alligator suit standing on the Vatican steps, and in several other locations in the Holy Enclave, and sent them back to Fort Lauderdale and had them released to the press.

When he got home, he was immediately fired and bounced out of his office on his ass.

So no, I don’t think the alligator idea is going to fly with the Feesh either.

But this is one ugly logo. What do you expect from a New York art dealer – Picasso?

  3. pete611 - Sep 24, 2011 at 7:35 PM

I think it’s very pretty. I would wear it in a get pride parade. And I’m not even gay.

    • Old Gator - Sep 24, 2011 at 10:17 PM

Not one of the screaming queens I know would be caught dead wearing that thing. Slobbering Ozzie might wear it, though – with class, as he claims.

I call Photoshop. Granted, I’m looking at this on my mobile, but the logo looks a bit flat on the front of the curved hat. The stickers on the bill are curved, yet the logo appears flat, almost raised, as if its floating. If I’m wrong then I’m wrong.

    • Drew Silva - Sep 24, 2011 at 7:40 PM

You might have a point. The left side of the logo doesn’t curve like it should.

      • bigleagues - Sep 24, 2011 at 10:47 PM

Since this story broke, I have been watching this rather closely. And I’m a member of that “message board”.

Anyway, I opened this photo in Photoshop, blew it up and used a common technique to analyze the authenticity of photos. All I can say is inconclusive. I understand what Drew is saying, but the logo does appear to be the standard raised stitching of a New Era game cap.

At the very least the cap photo was done with professional techniques. Photographing a black cap actually requires some knowledge of lighting. And I say inconclusive only because I do see some pixelating around the edges of the logo (which could be do to resolution) but there is no problem with pixelation with the rest of the logo.

All that is to say, if it is Photoshopped, it’s someone with A LOT of skill and A LOT of time on their hands.

Either way the logo remains hideous and it occurred to me that the “Marlin” swoosh on the top left of the logo looks a lot like Carnival Cruise Lines logo. Miami, btw, is the ocean cruise capitol of the world.

      • Drew Silva - Sep 24, 2011 at 10:59 PM

        Great stuff. Thank you.

      • paperlions - Sep 25, 2011 at 10:01 AM

I agree with bigleagues. I took a close look at it too, and if it is photoshopped, it is a damned fine job. I also measured the outside edges of the “M”, and as you would expect the edge that is supposed to be closer to the camera is actually longer than the edge that is supposed to be farther away from the camera. If someone “shopped” it; they took their time and really know what they are doing.

      • bigleagues - Sep 25, 2011 at 12:26 PM

        Excellent job by you!

  5. pete611 - Sep 24, 2011 at 7:36 PM

Meant to day gay pride parade

    • sandpiperair - Sep 24, 2011 at 8:21 PM

      Try again!

  6. kindasporty - Sep 24, 2011 at 8:29 PM

    It is most definitely photoshopped

    • jwpersinger - Sep 28, 2011 at 11:41 AM

This technology is pretty impressive, but if you notice the stickers on the bill have similar coloring as the M on the hat. The rest of the hat is obviously black, so I’m wondering if the brightness on the photo has to do more with the bright colors of the original image or if it has actually been doctored. But Lets be honest, even if this IS the original image, we will never know because with so much bad press, it will be changed before the official release date anyway!

  7. gb4ever0811 - Sep 24, 2011 at 9:13 PM

My wife says it looks like a 3-year-old designed it.

I think it looks terrible. I like the logo now much better. As a Phils phan I’m offended we have to play against this logo so many times during the season…I feel so bad for the Florida Marlins fan who has to endure this. He must be mortified when he realizes he’ll be in that empty stadium by himself wearing this new logo…

  8. cur68 - Sep 24, 2011 at 9:36 PM

If this color scheme is any reflection of what the uniform will look like then I wish to offer my condolences to the entire Marlin’s fan base, and staff, players included. This, I might add, is symptomatic of what you get in a league that lets a pitcher pick up a bat and face game pitching. It is just mayhem.

    • Old Gator - Sep 24, 2011 at 10:19 PM

Feesh fans have endured much worse at the hands of this ownership, I assure you. This is merely adding insult to injury. They should have called William Gibson in Vancouver to find them a Coolhunter to comment on this atrocity before they went ahead and leaked it – the analogy with incontinence would not be inappropriate. The damned thing looks like a urine sample being tested for gonorrhea.

      • phillyfrank - Sep 24, 2011 at 11:16 PM

Cayce retired. She’s making denim jackets now.

      • cur68 - Sep 24, 2011 at 11:22 PM

It is with great pleasure and relief that I admit that I have no idea what “a urine sample being tested for gonorrhea” looks like. I cherish my ignorance.

Looking at that thing again and I wonder, is this going to far? Will it push you, Old Gator, over the edge? Next to be seen in a clock tower with a manifesto, a ‘journal’, and something hi-powered? Will you demand the head of Loria on a stick?

I fear this hat and logo is just the blurry tip of the spear. Soon enough we’ll see that leaf bladed instrument of Feesh destruction; that color scheme on a uniform. What sort of uniform? Well, something in a jodhpur I reckon. Anyone who’d put forth such a bruise to the vision would embrace the first jodhpur-uniform in MLB.

I say without reservation or fear of ridicule that if The Iron Giant can still hit bombs while wearing such a get-up then he is one of the great ones.

  9. fat4jc - Sep 24, 2011 at 9:38 PM

First thought that came to my mind? Super Mario Bros bought the team?

  10. cackalackyank - Sep 24, 2011 at 10:02 PM

They are changing the name of the team to the Miami Rainbow Warriors, didn’t you get
    the press release?

    • Old Gator - Sep 24, 2011 at 10:10 PM

…and the new theme song will contain the lyrics, “Warriors, come out and play-yay….”

  11. drew88mm - Sep 24, 2011 at 11:49 PM

THIS LOGO IS DOWNRIGHT HORRIBLE. Swap the F on the hat for a M, I like the current logo

  12. montu101 - Sep 25, 2011 at 12:23 AM

Remember when the Miami Heat had the yellow seats in the bottom section of the arena, how bad it looked on TV,well eventually they did fix the problem. It’s one thing to have a part of your arena not looking right, but quite another to have your players having to play and represent the team with a bad looking logo and uniform. My feeling on the logo and colors is that that M just doesn’t look right,as others have put it,it looks like it was created by your 4th grader in art class. The colors are too pastelish,I can just imagine having to retire Billy the Marlin to make way for Billy the bunny,it’ll be Easter every Sunday at the Marlin games.I think the abstract looking Marlin is tolerable,so is the peachy orange, but the light blue needs to get darker and the yellow,I don’t know what to say about the yellow it’s the color that gives it that rainbow look, simply put “DROP THE YELLOW”.Make the uniforms clean and simple, drop the pinstripes and redesign that hideous M.

  13. groovymcgroove - Sep 25, 2011 at 3:26 AM

These hats will go nicely with the University of Maryland’s new football uniforms.

  14. Walk - Sep 25, 2011 at 11:19 AM

The m is likely to stay, at least some version. I had thought i had heard, possibly wrongly, that a name change was going to happen when they moved to the new ballpark. The m likely has to remain because of that. Actually i think that m shall be known as “that hideous M”, at least by me.

  15. JB (the original) - Sep 26, 2011 at 9:09 AM

Maybe it’s a Florida thing. Remember the original Devil Rays uni’s?

  16. jwpersinger - Sep 28, 2011 at 11:43 AM

My bet is that it is an original image, and the marlins “leaked” it on purpose. If it was a hit, then they would keep it. Since it’s not, they will come up with something new and say this was never actually the logo just some imposter!

  17. Ohad - Oct 12, 2011 at 3:19 PM

It’s a photoshop of an Atlanta Braves hat (which is why the hat is blue and not black). If you look at the side by side photo below the photoshop becomes apparent:!/fishatbat/media/slideshow?
