Comment of the Day: Red Sox Fail-Porn

There has been an electricity and excitement in the baseball world these past few days. But for as much as everyone wants to analyze it and talk about the drama of the moment and everything, I can’t help but think this little expression of id — from the reader ny82jy in the Ellbury thread cuts to the heart of it:

To every single red sux fan on here. hahahahahahahahahahaha! i hope u guys complete the choke job tonight and go a game behind TB. You guys are pathetic. I wish i could have all the comments from earlier in the year when you guys thought you were so great. Your pitching sux your managing sux lately and so does your hitting too. Gonzalaz who? Yooooo! who? You guys are a true joke.hahahahahaha

This is basically all RedSoxenfreude. It’s why no one except deadenders like me care about the Braves collapse. It’s all about looking at the big guy and laughing as he gets what we consider to be his comeuppance (whether it’s due or not).

This is just kind of primal. And I get it. I even feel it a little.  But I don’t think we should pretend that it’s anything other sheer SoxFailPorn.

LETS GO BRAVES! LETS GO BRAVES! LETS GO BRAVES!

  2. shaggylocks - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:37 PM

Wow. I see garbage comments like that all the time, but I never thought they were Comment of the Day worthy. Well at least he almost always capitalized the first word of each “sentence,” so it has that going for it…

  3. aceshigh11 - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:38 PM

    Well, Craig…

…on behalf of RSN, I’d like to thank you for giving the obviously articulate and erudite “ny82jy” the attention he so desperately deserves.

An individual with such wit, clarity of thought, and insight is truly worthy of the HBT spotlight.
    ;)

    • aceshigh11 - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:47 PM

Having said that, the crux of ny82jy’s post is undeniably true.

This team is flat-out BAD. There are no words to describe a meltdown like this.

I can’t say that the Schadenfreude doesn’t irk on some level, but I completely understand it given the arrogance of certain Sox fans at the beginning of the season.

I was convinced from Day One that such hubris was gonna come back to bite us in the ass.

      • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:53 PM

Wait, there’s words. They are as bad as they were in the beginning of the season. It’s not like we haven’t seen the Red Sox this bad THIS VERY SEASON! They’ve proven capable of stringing losses together quite effectively this season, so I’m not the least surprised.

      • aceshigh11 - Sep 27, 2011 at 4:16 PM

I’m talking about BEFORE the season even began.

Some Boston publication ill-advisedly pronounced them “Best Team Ever”, or some such nonsense.

But yeah, they’re pretty much ending as they started: in the toilet.

  4. 18thstreet - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:46 PM

I, for one, thought we were so great because we kept scoring more runs than our opponents. What a fool I was!

  5. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:47 PM

Interesting choice, Craig. Giving this troll this kind of attention guarantees garbage like this being posted on your blog by him and other trolls for god knows how long

    • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:55 PM

Yeah peculiar pick indeed for “comment of the day”. Craig is clearly upset that I called him out for not being a “solid” fan for “giving up” on my beloved Bravos. I did so in a much more articulate way, I dare say, than this troll too.

What’s funny is that the poor troll is going to get thrashed on this comments thread now. Sucker.

  6. crispybasil - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:49 PM

My sources tell me that ny82jy skipped school today because he had back-to-back quizzes on geometry and the first ten pages of “The Pearl.”

  7. scottj27 - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:56 PM

Lord help me I love Craig’s unapologetic love of posting things for the pageviews. Almost as much as I love a good glass of scotch. Scotchy Scotch Scotch.

  8. southofheaven81 - Sep 27, 2011 at 2:57 PM

If I had to eat it in 2004, the Sawks fans have to eat it now. Go watch The Depaahted down by the haahbor & cry about it, suck-asses!!!

    SoxFailPorn

This should be a hashtag on twitter….

    • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Sep 27, 2011 at 4:53 PM

      No, it shouldn’t.

  10. leerosenthall - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:01 PM

Hey, I’ll confess to having reveled in a little RedSoxenfreude over the past month, and I say this even as somebody who’s always liked the Sox and swore to my dog (she spent her first half of life in Cape Cod) I’d be rooting for the Sox if the Phils got eliminated. The temptation was just too great. But after a certain point, I found their collapse, and the Braves’ as well, to be incredibly unsettling.

Then the Phillies went on that surreal eight-game losing streak, and I started to wonder if the earth had been knocked off its axis. The only thing that will help me recover from all this ‘slow trainwreck’ trauma is if the Yankees fall early in the playoffs.

Karma’s a bitch, ny82jy. As a wise man once said: It ain’t over ’til it’s over.

  11. woodenulykteneau - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:08 PM

Does this mean the “Linda Lovelace is going to be next manager” jokes are back on the table?

  12. mattymatty - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:25 PM

I understand why people hate the Red Sox and therefore their fans. I also get why people hate any team that has extended success. What I don’t understand is why someone who had little if any grasp of grammar was the one chosen to highlight that fact.

    • leerosenthall - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:44 PM

Think of it like the Internet version of itinerant art. There’s just a beauty and poignancy in the illiteracy of it all. (Kind of like Charlie Manuel’s pressers,) Plus it’s a pefect representation of a crazed Yankee fan.

  13. lanflfan - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:27 PM

Not a good weekend for Boston sports, with the Sox fading fast and the Patriots choking against the Bills.

    • natstowngreg - Sep 27, 2011 at 6:42 PM

As a long-suffering Bills fan, and one who has little use for the Red Sox, sorry, can’t spare much sympathy.

    • bobwsc - Sep 27, 2011 at 9:00 PM

yea it was terrible, and the Bruins are getting ready to defend the cup. people are jumping off bridges.

      There’s an apostrophe in that’s.

  15. APBA Guy - Sep 27, 2011 at 3:55 PM

One of the beautiful things about being among the few remaining A’s fans is that everyone, including us, realizes how bad a team the A’s are, so we rarely see “A’s suck” posts. A post like that would contribute nothing, would merely be piling on, and would probably reveal the author to be little better than a single celled organism, wriggling about the swamp, anxiously awaiting that magic moment of cell division so one other thing might notice his tiny existence.

    • goawaydog - Sep 27, 2011 at 11:00 PM

      The A’s STINK!
Sincerely, your friends across the Bay
(something about inserting a sarcasm tag here)

  16. sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Sep 27, 2011 at 4:01 PM

And it will all be complete if Arizona sweeps Philly out of the playoffs, then IPK shuts down the Yankees in the World Series.

Crows might end up on the endangered species list so much will have to be eaten.

  17. 24missed - Sep 27, 2011 at 4:17 PM

I can’t believe this was called a comment of the day.

To completely lump any fans of one team into a stereotype is crap. I’m a Sox fan and I treat all fans as baseball fans. Most folks on here do the same and that’s what separates this blog from most of the others.

I root for my team, every game. I don’t bail, whatever the case.

Did some RS fans talk smack about how great the team was performing? I’m sure. Probably, those same fans that were such asses then are the same ones that have been bitching and moaning about team with each error or strike out. Fair weather. The “fans” that are there for the highs and not the lows.

Don’t throw us all in one group. Real RS fans are real baseball fans.

  18. mianfr - Sep 27, 2011 at 4:39 PM

OH MY GOD I JUST REMEMBERED. Remember when the Red Sox started 2-10 and everyone was like “Ahh… They… Just wasted a shit ton of money…” but then righted the ship and whatnot?

Well, they might not make the playoffs as it turns… So the start did hurt them, I suppose.

In related news, the baseball season is too damn long.

  19. WhenMattStairsIsKing - Sep 27, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Craig, you got some ‘splainin to do on this one! We all now fear that we’ll have to type like we’re 4 years old in order to be heard.

  20. foreverchipper10 - Sep 27, 2011 at 5:45 PM

    Craig,

I also care about the Braves collapse. It is disheartening to know the only way they can (seemingly) make the playoffs is if the Astros beat the Cards two more times. At least that is the fate I have resigned for this squad.

  21. dirtyharry1971 - Sep 27, 2011 at 11:14 PM

who did craig pick to win the AL east? oh thats right, it was the boston redscum. How’s that pick working out for ya?
