I disagree that a 1B with a <.320 OBP is acceptable. No matter how good of a defender they are.

The Angels don’t just need 1 bat, they need 3. Morales could be 1, even if it’s at DH. And if Trumbo gets his BABIP up to league average, closer to .300, he’ll be acceptable, especially with his defense. But they also need a corner outfield/3B bat. My observations are that the OF of Wells, Hunter and Trout/Bourjous was better than expected, but .765, .761, and 2 x .661 will not get it done vs. Texas, who send .890, .828, .749, and .728 into the OF.

There’s reason to suspect he’ll have a lower BABIP his entire career than league average. He hits an higher % of fly balls and pop-ups.

That said, I agree with you that if he doesn’t learn how to take a walk, or play SS, he’ll have a very short MLB career.

Trumbo is a slugger. He’s just not a great one. He’s a great corner IF/OF/PH kind of guy, the role Russell Branyan is currently filling.

Also, K-Mo, you’re about six months too late. I would love to see the Kendrys Morales of 2009 and (part of) 2010, but I think the Angels are playing with fire if they’re counting on his return to anchor their offense (again).

.254/.291/.477 is not an everyday player at 1B. Even if he is as good of a fielder as UZR says he is.

His BABIP is only .274 so he’s a touch unlucky, but even with a more average number there his OBP is just north of .300 which is pretty much unplayable at 1B.
