It’s been awhile since people got actual “tape” on a pitcher, In this day and age I would not be surprised to see the opposition whip out the iPads (or simile) and by the third inning have video streaming of the rookie’s delivery available.

You could argue though that the Red Sox wouldn’t even be in this position had the Yankees not taken 3 of 4 from the Rays last week, including sweeping the doubleheader.

Betances is a great prospect, but one does have to wonder how many innings he’ll get tonight. Betances had a “ligament reinforcement procedure” (originally believed to be Tommy John surgery) in 2009, and his previous high in IP in a professional season was 121 in 2008. He currently sits at 126 IP for the year, and while I realize that isn’t a huge jump by any means, I’m sure the Yanks will want to be cautious tonight with one of their stud pitching prospects. Should be a lot of fun watching him tonight. Hopefully the Rays can get something going off him early, although their offense has been so spotty throughout the year who knows. 5 runs is a magic number for the Rays: They have won their last 23 contests in which they have scored at least that many.

Whether you’re a fan of the Rays, Sox, Cards, Braves, or just along for the ride tonight, nights like these are what make baseball great.

Just remember, there’s no way of predicting when the Rays offense will go to sleep. It happens a lot — it’s the main reason I didn’t think they’d keep pace with Boston. And if Betances is sharp, he certainly has the stuff to dominate.

All seriousness aside, Francona deserves credit for his response to the Yanx using a string of relief pitchers against the Rays: he said that Girardi and his team have earned the right to make whatever decisions they make this week.

But after all, the Yanx would surely be more attracted to facing Beckett/Lester than Price/Shields in any potential playoff series…

Could be, but really, who knows. A new pitcher has an inherent surprise advantage of haven’t been seen before by these MLB hitters, and sometimes that can outweigh the potential lack of experience/talent. It could really go either way, and it’s very volatile, but so many times it seems like guys can come up and be effective for a few starts before other teams can get tape on him and adjust.
