Oh look: Joe West and Angel Hernandez get to umpire the postseason

Sep 29, 2011, 3:00 PM EDT

Terry Francona, Joe West, Angel Hernandez

Major League Baseball just announced its umps and, to my surprise, fear and — on some strange level amusement — Cowboy Joe West and his notorious crew get to work the Milwaukee-Arizona series.

The whole crew: West, Ron Kulpa, Alfonso Marquez, Bruce Dreckman, and additions Jeff Kellogg and James Hoye for outfield duty. It’s a way better crew now that Angel Hernandez is off it but, you know, West is still there. And Hernandez still gets to ump in the Cardinals-Phillies series.  Oh heck, let’s just look at the rest of them:

  • Detroit vs. New York:  Gerry Davis, Tony Randazzo, Eric Cooper, Dan Iassogna, Ted Barrett and Bill Welke;
  • St. Louis vs. Philadelphia: Jerry Layne, Chris Guccione, Jerry Meals, Angel Hernandez — woot! — Gary Cederstrom and Chad Fairchild.  And remember, Meals is the guy who handed the Braves that win in the 19-inning game in Pittsburgh, so that’s a strong crew there, partner.
  • Tampa Bay vs. Texas: Dale Scott, Mark Carlson, Kerwin Danley, Greg Gibson, Brian Gorman and Marvin Hudson.

Just remember: being an umpire means never having to say you’re sorry. Unless you’re Jim Joyce, who did say he was sorry. And everyone likes him too. And he doesn’t get to ump in the Division Series, so there’s a lesson in that for you.

I hope Kuato escapes Joe West’s neck Pouch during the first playoff game and sings Chocolate Rain to Angel Hernandez.

I love that video…cruel, but funny as hell…

That’s two of the worst umpires in mlb. I call bullshit on those two anywhere near a playoff game, unless they use instant replay, that’s how inept West is. Hernandez isn’t quite as bad, but close.

shows how far MLB umpiring has fallen. BTW, thought he was called Country Joe West.

      It’s “Cowboy” Joe West

Allan Huber Selig is merely ensuring that the umpires interject plenty of “Human Element” in the post season.

  5. Francisco (FC) - Sep 29, 2011 at 3:33 PM

Joe West must have some great blackmail material on Bud Selig.

  6. CJ - Sep 29, 2011 at 3:35 PM

Selig had no choice: West and Hernandez threatened to ump for another 15 years if he didn’t schedule them for the post season.

Gwaaaaaaad, the nightmare continues. Not that collection of half wits, homey please!

Well, lets make the best of things then; does anyone want to take make predictions who, what, when & how either West or Hernandez screws the first call?
-I got first screw up to Hernandez, he’ll miss an obvious safe call, 2nd inning, it’ll go against Philly, and declare an out. It’ll cost Philly the game.

Who makes the first ejection, of what manner of team member and over what?
-I got Cowboy Joe West (CJW), ejecting Gibson, over balls and strikes.

Who gets in someone’s face first, over what, and is he right or wrong? Once again I go with m’boy CJW, Gibson, and of course CJW is wrong, are you kidding me?

I think your a little early on Hernandez. I see him killing a 6th inning rally with the improper out.

Since MLB picks umpires randomly and doesn’t care about their quality, they should just pick the teams randomly too. Forget about record to make the playoffs, just have a lottery.

    • CJ - Sep 29, 2011 at 3:45 PM

somehow the Braves and Sox still wouldn’t make it even then

  9. professor30 - Sep 29, 2011 at 3:39 PM

    what, no C.B. Bucknor?

This is how the Diamondbacks win the world series. One ump at a time.

worked for the giants in 2010 and the marlins in 1997

In what other profession do you get so rewarded for not ever doing your job correctly?

    • CJ - Sep 29, 2011 at 4:13 PM

hate to go there, but the answer to your question is the called politics

  12. Jonny 5 - Sep 29, 2011 at 4:15 PM

The Union more than likely has caused this atrocity actually. Seniority or some other bs union requirement.

Oh, so there will be basically no strike zone consistent enough to enjoy these games to their full potential. Thanks for the heads up.

By the way, neckpouch is a brilliantly coined term.

The lack of umpire support even from the aptly named “The Baseball Idiot” shows how truly egregious even he thinks this is.
