When a team is good year after year its fans get obnoxious and arrogant - that is one of the bennies of having a good team. When that team comes into your town and starts beating on YOUR team as if has for years and YOUR team stands up to them and comes back and beats them and not only beats them but ruins their season - you get to celebrate. And so does your team.

The obnoxious and arrogant fans (I am a Patriots fan, don't care about the sox) - we have a few choices - 1) congratulate the team - and their fans - that beat yours, or 2) stfu, or 3) both.

More power to the Birds.

Congratulations, Orioles.

The Orioles played like something was at stake. The Sox didn't. The Orioles hung in and made plays when it counted, with key hits and glove/arm work. The Sox didn't.

The Orioles played like a contender. The Sox didn't.

The Red Sox committed the unpardonable sin of making me not give a damn about them. Been a fan for 40+ years, and this is the first time. Good teams make good plays when they need them. Bad teams don't. The Red Sox were baseball's worst team in September.

Let the Orioles celebrate. I hope like hell that it stung to watch it from the visitors' dugout.

I thought the celebration was over the top. What are they celebrating? We're in the basement of the AL East again! Hooray we have another top 5 draft pick!
Obviously I'm in the minority on this one, but that's fine by me. Especially based on comments saying a team earned the right to talk trash or that they showed up the opponent. I'm not that old, but I remember when a win did all the talking for you, without dogpiles or corny dances....

I was at the game Wednesday night... I'm an O's fan but wore a Rays hat. I sat in the lower left field box with some other Red Sox fans (actually lots of Red Sox fans.) Before the rain delay, one guy in the Red Sox Nation saw my Rays hat and said "they're not doing too well tonight, huh?"

After the rain delay Boston's bullpen was doing quite well. One guy in the LF corner screamed "COME ON RED SOX NATION, LET'S WAKE UP!" Then Pap comes out of the bullpen and everyone in the section was in hysteria... there were two girls bowing to him, saying "WE'RE NOT WORTHY!" It was disgusting to watch, especially when Pap got the first two outs of the inning on strike outs. Then Davis doubled. I was still depressed. Then Nolan doubled him home, tying the game and I yelled "COME ON RED SOX NATION, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Got some angry looks... then Andino singled him home and the rest is history.

On the way out of the concourse, I heard a girl next to me grab her phone and said "THE RAYS WON?" All the Red Sox fans in the area were shocked... and the O's showed the Longoria walkoff on the jumbo tron.

It was sweet to be there and be part of this. In regards to the O's celebrating, who cares? All the Red Sox fans would have been doing the same in our home park if they got the win. Heck most of the fans who came to the game aren't even real Red Sox fans and know their team's history. I sat next to a fan in his 20s from MA and he was well-knowledged about the team and knew the history. The fans that saw the movie Fever Pitch are the ones that brought forth this Red Sox Nation entitlement notion that's out there today.

Yes, a lot of media people up here need to eat crow about comments made about Buck and the O's...of course they'll never admit it, but every year they crap on Baltimore's team and fans. I didn't say ownership, because I think they deserve the crap. I'd like to see the O's do a lot better, seems like everytime they show a glimpse of promise, they aren't able to follow up the next season. Curse of BJ Ryan?

T'was all they had to show for the season and i don't begrudge them one bit. They suffered a lot, the O's, losing so much like they did. I hope this is the Rubicon for them. They beat arguably the best in the Sox. When it really mattered, too. If they can carry that attitude effort and philosophy into next season, they'll be great. It'll be long over due IMO.

Yes, they are getting out of hand. Celebrating a walk off victory is OK, but some of the Icky shuffle stuff is disproportionate to the meaning of the game. (like when the closer blows the lead then the team scores in the bottom of the inning.)

But as the the Orioles Wednesday, well, they have been beaten down by the Red Sox and Yankees and now Rays since Jeffery Maier gave Jeter the HR. All the guys in the system and on the team come up knowing that, as long as they are on the Orioles, they are not going to be in the playoffs or world series like they have been dreaming of their entire lives. And here they are preventing one of the teams that keep them from winning from going to the post season. Let them have their fun.

Same with the Phillies infestations at Nationals Park. Last September, I watched from my seat as the Phillies (and their obnoxious fans) celebrated winning the NL East. I never blamed the players; they had won, and weren't at all obnixious. But it did make all those Nats wins over the Phillies this season that much sweeter.

A well deserved celebration. The only thing the Orioles had to play for in the month of September is to screw other teams chances of making the playoffs. They pulled it off nicely.

It's only their playoff game because they played so badly for the first 161 games that could not contend for the real playoffs. I agree with your other points, but being bums for a full season shouldn't justify any possible inappropriate behavior at the end.

The difference is that the Phillies had already secured their playoff spot; they have bigger goals to focus on. If you're that Orioles team, shutting the door on Boston's playoff hopes is the greatest possible outcome for you with 10 games left to play.

Also watched on MASN (in Northern Virginia). Thorne's comment seconds before Andino hit the ball, asking if the Baseball Gods were laughing, was priceless. In a miserable, underachieving season, this was the Orioles' moment.

That was their playoff, their game 7 of the WS. For what, about 3 minutes after it was over, the Sawx still had a chance of going on. But for the O's, the season was over.

Now a good point that should continue to be raised is this: those walkoff celebrations are dangerous. That kid who broke his leg during one in Anaheim last season didn't make it back this year, and the Halos probably could have used his bat during their own failed stretch run. So yes, professionalism -- acting like you've been there and done it before -- is both saner and safer than group hoopla at home plate.

The only possible criticism of this specific event is of that "NOT IN OUR HOUSE" mentality, which is typical of the NFL crowd. But it's a factor: one thing I noted about that other disaster, the one in Atlanta, was the Phillies' rather muted congratulations around the mound after the last out. They were visitors who had just wrought desolation to the home dugout, and they were aware of it; so they behaved like pros in refraining from a silly celebration that would only have made it worse for their collapsed opponent.

But again, those points made, the O's should not be subject to any specific criticism for what they did Wed. night. It was their playoff game won, and maybe a springboard for next season. I think the Sawx have bigger issues than to carry a grudge about how the O's behaved Wed. night.
