I’m not so sure it’s the Tigers that got hurt the most.
J. Verlander – 2 BB, 1 K, 25 pitches, 1 run on errors by fielding
CC Sabathia – 0 BB, 4 K, 27 pitches (2inn), 1 run on a short field homer

Looks like CC was outpitching him. A very small sample, statistically, but none the less.

And with the pitch count, Verlander may not have been much in past 5.

There’s no way to tell who this hurts or helps.

It hurts the Tigers because:
- At the time of the game resuming, they will have a nearly all-righthanded lineup vs. Nova. Nova isn’t one of those guys that’s really nasty on righties, but I’m sure Leyland would prefer to have Boesch and Betemit against him.
- Verlander is likely going to pitch 1 game, at home, instead of 2 pressure games on the road. Although, he may not have lasted that long tonight given his first inning control issues.
- Valverde has already pitched a career high in games and innings, no telling if he’s ready to close 2-3 games in a row if needed.

It hurts the Yankees because:
-They now have a rookie lined up to pitch game 1 of a playoff series, and possibly game 5, depending on….
-….Sabathia wants to pitch game 2. Girardi would prefer to pitch him in game 3. However, if he does pitch in game 2, he’d probably be available on short rest for game 5 at home, with Nova ready to back him up.
- The most obvious problem: AJ Burnett or Phil Hughes has to start game 4 if needed. At least they are fly ball pitchers in a pitchers’ park, but neither one instills any sort of confidence. Burnett is the more likely option.
- The Yankees’ three-headed bullpen monster is much more effective when they don’t have to pitch 2-3 days in a row, which might happen now.

Remember earlier this year when LaRussa knew a big storm was coming so he scratched his scheduled starter, I think Carpenter, at the last minute and started the game with a delivery out if the pen. They played like 2 Innings and then went into a 2.5 hour rain delay, after which the opposing starter didn’t come back and LaRussa played the rest of the game with his ace.
