I am a lifelong Mets fan, but I admire the Phillies for how they run their organization and play the game hard. I dont see them buying anything- they pay their homegrown players (who are stars) well, and have traded for other players. Of course you pay Halladay well! Phillies are the best team in baseball..again dammit.

aces; there was 1 commenter who got his comments removed and himself likely banned. He went by the curious handle of “berkmansbicepts”. Whiny little dunce, too. That’s been about it for douchey Cards fans. The rest of them were pretty cool. I call bandwagoner on that version of the ‘cepts.

As a relatively disinterested party I was pretty impressed with the Philly Phans; calm while losing then so happy you could smell their brains sizzling with joy right through the interwebs. Good “company” to watch a ball game with.

Analyzing a loss = inventing an excuse? C’mon now. There are reasons for a loss. Always. Whether its pitching, hitting, fielding, whatever. The reason you lost was TLR left Lohse in to pitch to Howard. Watched him get knocked out of the park 2′ foul by Victorino left handed, and then STILL leave him in for Ibanez.

Thats just it, they don’t have to pay the big bucks. They gave Halladay a market contract. Oswalt’s contract was mostly picked up by the Astros. Pence is making less than a million dollars this year. Lee took below top dollar to come to Philly. The money is all tied up in Utley, Rollins, Howard, Blanton and Victorino.

And we get pissed and freak out because we care. We don’t just stop going to see the games, like the Rams fans. The Eagles could be 2-10 and they’d still sell out every home game. The Phillies have the second longest sell out streak in MLB.

The starting position players are 4/9 (Utley, Howard, Rollins, Chooch) home grown and the starting right fielder until the trade deadline is home grown (Dom Brown), another being a rule 5 pick in Victorino, Polanco was a Phillie before and Ibanez is on his 4th or 5th year here on a free agent contract. Hamels, Madson, Stutes, Bastardo… all home grown. The payroll is high because they pay Utley, Howard and Rollins a lot of money. Just remember, Joe Blanton and Jose Contreras make a combined $11Mil this year. Howard, Utley, Rollins, Victorino and Chooch make a combined $60 Million. Paying your own guys is NOT buying a championship, people. Its called being loyal and keeping your guys happy. We also TRADED for Halladay and Oswalt and Pence. We barely paid a dime for Oswalt. Essentially, the only free agent ‘big names’ the Phillies have gotten over the past 5 years are Ibanez and Lee.

The pitching is a rookie home grown in Worley, home grown Kendrick, home grown Hamels, traded for Oswalt and Halladay, and free agent Lee, who took less money to be in Philly. Philly HAS the money, so wouldn’t it be disingenuous to the fans to NOT spend it in order to put the best possible product on the field that they can? The problem is that you’re complaining about Philly spending money, when you should really be asking “Why ISN’T my team spending money?”

Just because Philly fans criticize our teams, it doesn’t mean we don’t support them . . . sort of like our kids. We are an opinionated fan base, but there’s a reason that Cliff Lee wanted to come back here.

“Philly fans are known to be assholes” is a tired old storyline that lazy sportswriters and sports talk folks trot out regularly. Every city has them.

Why would we crush our team? We are considered baseball heaven bc unlike you guys we support our team no matter what, win or lose. I dont get pissed if the cards lose, im upset bc I know they are trying their best but you cant win them all.

Cards fans are the best bc we dont boo our own players, hell we dont even boo the other team half the time.

B. develops its players,
C. gains fan support with added success ,
D. sells out every home game,
E. spends this revenue to retain these players
F. signs 3 free agents (only one with big contract) in 3 years…

They were battling/scoring in the 9th against a rookie reliever, Michael Stutes, that will never sniff a close game in the playoffs. He may never pitch again in the playoffs. Charlie Manuel only put him out there because of the huge lead. Madson came in and took care of business.

You are the #1 offense in the league and were 3 hit by Halladay. You now have to face Cliff Lee tomorrow. If I were a Cards fan, I’d be worried.

Also how did the Cards lay down? They were still battling/scoring in the 9th inning. We cardinal fans no not to panic, the Cards beat Lee in the regular season and they can do it in the post season. Even with their injuries this year they were still one of the top offenses, still a lot of ball left so theres no need to get pissed amd freak out….like philly fans do in all sports

Why you wouldn’t be pissed? Halladay retired 21 of your batters straight. Pujols was unproductive besides the walk and the rest of the lineup was anemic. Halladay threw a 3 hitter against your team.

You have to now face Lee, another ace, tomorrow, with your ace Carpenter on (3) days rest. If there was a game to win, it was tonight. And the Cards blew it. I’d be pretty angry and nervous right now.

Why would we be pissed for scoring 6 runs, 3 of which off the best pitcher in baseball. So Lohse had his one bad inning like always and things fell apart. Its game 1, which any reasonable fan should of known halladay was going to win its not over yet.

Did 2007-2008-2009 not happen? Rhose teams were almost entirely home grown with players on below market contracts except Utley and small minimal salary/skill additions like Lohse and Blanton the only real top addition the Phillies made in that time span was the Cliff Lee trade and that happened half way through the 2009 season. After Charlie Manuel got the Phillies back to the playoffs for the first time in a decade and got them their first world series in 28 years. But ya all he did was sit back and rely on the teams salary.

Seeing how big salaries make winners. That must be why the Mets Cubs Dodgers White Sox and Red Sox are in the playoffs this year. Oh Wait.

Finally, a St. Lois fan here on the board to talk baseball. First of all, I’m not a Tony LaRussa basher. Always thought he was a pretty good manager. His track record speaks for itself. Games are mostly won on the field by players, not managers.

Second, they should be here commenting about their team laying an egg to the Phillies. I would be outraged if I were a Cardinals fan with what happened.

Third, it’s not called bragging/auguring. It’s called discussing the game. We have all heard that St. Louis is a great baseball town. Well, why do I not see any outrage? I think this is a legitimate question.

They should win with thier ace going against the cards 3rd best pitcher. I dont know what other cardinal fans were saying because I do not read the comments very much but it seems like you are mad bc they are not on here complaining about the game. Phillie fans are hated by all other fan bases bc they bitch about everything and if the phillies lost you would be on here making excuses.

Also for people saying TLR is terrible, really dont know baseball. I gurrantee you would rather have him than charlie manual who just has to sit there and let his team play. I guess thats what happens when you turn into a team like the yankees ans try buying a championship.

But, St. Louis loses and there are no fans from there here discussing what went wrong. I saw St. Louis fans throughout the week comment here. Where are you now? Whatever.
