I’d point to not only Cano’s hitting prowess but the fact that at 28 he’s entering his prime and is very likely to shine even brighter in the next few years. Also, it’s not like these guys are out there alone, they have the requisite supporting characters like Pedroia, Lester, Teixeira Granderson Elsbury and Nova.

John Farrell saved Epstein and Francona who don’t know much about pitching. Now, with both the Rays and Farrell-Alex Anthopoulo with the Blue Jays, the Red Sox and Yankees cannot continue to bully around the Al East by spending even more money to by replacement players when some of those they overpayed to bring in go belly up — which is what Epstein and Cashman have been doing since they got in their jobs.
