I think it means that if they insisted he come back or at least just picked up the option, he would have stayed out of loyalty. Since they left the option open, he could leave if it didn’t feel right. Of course, what do I know.

Francona is a class act who will be greatly missed in Boston.

Always struck me as a helluva nice guy, and a straight-shooter.

He really doesn’t much else to prove. I wish him well, wherever he lands.

Does that mean this was not a mutual parting of ways as it has often been portrayed, but a straight-up firing of Francona by the Boston front office? If that’s the case their decision simply makes no sense
