That feeling is called hope….before, you just assumed they would lose after getting in…and were just happy they made the playoffs….now, it feels like they could win…so there is something to lose, which makes you nervous and makes you feel like there is something to blow.

Even more than ’06, we’re playing with house money. In 2006 we had two years’ worth of disappointment that we got an unexpected chance to redeem. This year it’s all gravy…hopefully enough gravy Albert decides to stay and the front office decides to keep him.

To me this feels more like the 2006 club than the 2004 or 2005 teams. Like in 06, this team wasn’t expected to do anything in the playoffs, but yet they got past the Phillies and their invincible starting rotation and into the LCS. The 04 and 05 teams were the juggernauts expected to win it all…

A contradiction is growing within me: as the Cardinals continue to play better than their opposition (i.e., winning) I continue to grow less confident that we will be able to pull this off. “Pull this off,” in this case, means “win the next game.” That’s how nervous I am. But it’s an exhilarating nervousness, one that fills me with dread and happiness. I’m happy to be here, yet terribly scared that, now that we’re here, we’re just going to blow it like we did in 2004 and 2005.

Ah, the existential debate of fanhood.
