FWIW, he was a pitcher in HS (and recruited by Miami for football) . . . seems to play the OF like someone who hasn't played it his whole life.

Let him play or commit to keeping him in AAA for the whole season. The up-and-back hasn't helped him.

I agree, we've misunderstood. There are warning signs though in Brown's particular case, such as winter ball last season and how he handled his demotion this season.

In fairness to Brown though, I would consider to be more representative of a sense of entitlement than a diva mentality. And based on how he's been treated in the organization (yes, including what those "close to him" have said :D ), I don't see much wrong with that. I wish he didn't, but if I were in shoes I'd do the same thing if not much worse.

Then I think there has been a miscommunication between the two of us. My original post was in response to a commenter who labeled Brown a diva. I still say no one can call him a diva or really comment on his attitude unless they work with him. Maybe at this stage no one who works with him would do so, as you point out, but that doesn't stop Joe Schmoe on WIP (or above) from doing so, which I think is unfair. All indications are that he has a good attitude so I'm happy to buy into that right now.

If you'll note above, I never said he was.

I was pointing out your "jump in logic" so to speak. You're point was that no one" can comment on his “diva attitude” unless we worked closely with him". My point was that no one close to him will call him a diva at this stage of his career, period.

If you took that to mean that, becuase no one will call him a diva, so that must make him one, I apologize as that wasn't my intent. That would be silly, and basically mean every prospect in baseball would then have to be a diva, which is slightly more ludicrous than that thought that no one can be considered a diva unless and until someone close to them bestows upon them such a description.

So the jump in logic is because no one on the team or close to him called him a diva or said that he had an attitude problem, then it's up to the general public to portray him as having such a problem, just because he hasn't met expectations?

And people in baseball do speak about prospects. When Bryce Harper blew a kiss to the opposing pitcher there was all sorts of talk about him and how he had to control his attitude.

have you ever heard of any organization calling their top prospect a diva? Do you know what that would do to his market value if they did choose to move him.

You don't see the Nats calling Harper a diva. Does that automatically make him not a diva?
Was Manny called a diva by his organization at 26? Milton Bradley perhaps?

No, no, and no. Be serious.

GM saying dumb things? That NEVER happens :D Seriously though, it all depends on what happens in the off-season. If he finds that he can't get adequate FA signings within his spending budget he may publicly change his stance on D-Brown.

Remember this is a guy who said in 2010. "No major trades." Boom Oswalt happened. In the 2010 offseason. "No major signings." Boom Lee happened. In 2011 Spring. "No major trades this deadline". Boom, Pence happened.

This guys routinely says one thing and then ends up doing another. Why should Brown be any different?

Not sure I agree because the players all would run through a brick wall for him, but I did remember myself going insane a few times when they failed to play smallball...

When you have this kind of pitching, you have to be able to manufacture runs. I know Cholly hates to give away outs, but he has to sell out on that to get a runner into scoring position.

This has hurt the Phils in the last two postseasons...

I'm sorry, but as someone who has probably played OF since he was a pre-teen, how is another year of AAA ball going to help Dom change the paths he takes to run down balls?

I think the bigger issue is his long swing... There needs to be some tinkering there to be able to sustain any kind of success over the long haul... Just like Mayberry opening his stance to cut down on being pounded inside, something needs to be done with that long, looping swing that DB has...

fair, but there is plenty of non-circumstancial evidence that points to him being at the very least quasi-diva-ish. Winter ball last year and how he handled his demotion this season (contrasted by how Mayberry handled is, you know, the right way) would be enough for conviction in the court of public opinion, especially in this town. And rightfully so IMO.

The Phillies are going to make 100 changes between now and April 1, 2012, but the one they don't make is what will haunt them starting on opening day. Charlie Manuel has to go...maybe he should be sent to Triple A for a year at least. He is not a motivator or mentor, but apparently he's a fun guy to hang out with and he just signed a multi-year deal in the spring so he's here for the duration. The Phillies are going nowhere until Charlie is sent home.
