I’m disgusted by the causal Red Sox fans here that offer nothing but knee-jerk rejections of a guy who was instrumental in two World Series titles, and though can’t play on the field – remain one of the best hitters in the league.

Why are casual fans like yourself lumping Ortiz in with the other far more substantive issues this team faces?!

I don’t get it. Offer some concrete reasons . . . and not a knee jerk reaction to a harmless ESPN interview. In fact, if you watched the segment of the interview where Dominguez ASKS Papi if he would consider the Yankees, tell me what about what he stated about the Red Sox that he isn’t correct about?

Fans have been demanding more frank, honest answers . . . well, Papi gives us one and the knee-jerk mob comes down on him. Amazing.

I have no idea what the phantom GM has planned and/or strategized with regard to the 2012 roster and whether or not Ortiz will fit in.

That said I am fine if he stays and fine if he goes.

However, I do not comprehend the vitriol being thrown at him by casual Red Sox fans like yourself. The statement you make really is quite absurd.

Papi responded to the question posed to him by Colleen Dominguez. A question that is standard protocol (as predictable as it is annoying) for media interviewing high profile free agent players of either the Red Sox or the Yankees.

But after you go and watch this segment of the interview tell me what part of what David Ortiz says you don’t agree with . . .

If you’re gonna attack Big Papi, at least do it with the facts and within the context of the statement he made.

At age 36, even coming off another very good season Ortiz has very little leverage in negotiating with the Red Sox. He’s a Free Agent. He is not not technically a Red Sox player at the moment. It’s in his best interests to make it know that all offers will be considered.

That said, he didn’t say explicitly in any way shape or form that he would go to the Yankees. In fact, he said he’d need to think about it. That it would be a difficult decision.

But more to the point, WHY would the Yankees need a player who is exclusively a DH? They don’t. They have several players already who will rotate in and out of the DH slot.

So the whole notion of him going to the Yankees is just another (ridiculous) angle being fished out by a columnist with nothing else to write about.

Disingenuous my ass. Claiming “the interviewer brought it up” is moronic. Why did Ortiz agree to do the interview in the first place? Ortiz is a clever self preservationist like everyone in that organization and he knows how to play the press and the fans and nothing gets Red Sox fans excited like bringing up the Yankees as a potential team.

As good as he is, and as much as he brings to the plate, personally, I’d like to see the Sox let him go. The Red Sox organization has allot of problems right now, that much is certain. I think they need a big shakeup in the ranks, and get rid of every player who’s contributing to the ‘drama’. Ortiz talking about possibly signing with the Yankee’s simply sounds like someone who’s really not interested in his current team. And that’s fine, people are allowed to want to move on.

The Sox need people who care about the team, right now, though. And if Ortiz isn’t interested in being a part of the solution, then he’s part of the problem. So, thanks for the great years Ortiz, but I personally don’t think your services are necessary any longer.

They don't need to, but the guy was significantly better than all other DH's this year. First in wOBA (.405 next was .383) and first in wRC (153 next was 139). Only Michael Young was within 1 WAR of Ortiz and he played the field some.

Selfish and entitled…you’ll get no arguments from me, but overrated? Just look at the year he had.

Even when he had relatively “down” years in ’09 and ’10, he still roared to life and put up close to 30 home runs and 100 RBI both years. That’s a fairly solid season for a DH.

Uhh. Calling this a stunt is a bit disingenuous. It sounds like the interviewer brought it up. And Ortiz gave the usual free agent answer of, “I’ll consider anywhere.” A free agent very rarely says he won’t go somewhere; to do so would be to lower his leverage.

Not a Sox or Yankees fan, but I have to seriously ask this question. Why? Why do they need to resign him? Why would they care which uniform he wears next year? If he wants to leave, let him. The way I see it, you have two options – 1.) Offer this guy what you think he’s worth.2.) Don’t offer this guy a contract because he’s not worth it. That’s basically it. Teams should divorce themselves from the same kind of blind loyalty of their fans and plan for the future.
