Camera angles can change the way someone looks but not a doubt in my mind that Lester was the biggest fried chicken eatin, beer drinking MF in the club house. He is most definitely several pounds heavier in the second picture. I find the entire article pretty darn funny, and even if it is true, it probably had nothing to do with the Sox demise down the stretch. Were they eating chicken and drinking beer when Bucky Dent homered to end their season? Probably not. It's just a major league choke job. Sometimes it happens (but I enjoy it a lot when it happens to the Red Sox),

Anyone else notice that Lester looks like he has downs syndrome? Couldn't they have picked a better picture? http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/gallery/2011/skinny_on_conditioning?pg=4

As for the question of them looking "fatter" later in the season, it's hard to say. The spring training pictures are posed so they make the player look their best. The late season pictures are action shots that don't provide the same posing. So you can't really compare the two

One of the biggest topics of discussion in MLB front offices right now is conditioning philosophy. Bill Beane is advocating a "return to the '70's" in the sense of leaner, better conditioned ballplayers. Further, he's seeing the season as more of an endurance event, rather than a series of sprints, and is gradually moving the A's to an EPL like conditioning program of more and more distance running (at very low speeds) and less weight work.

I rarely would stick up for the Red Sox (as a life long Yankee fan), but part of me feels like this is an incredible cheap shot. I get the Boston' media desire to stab at the Red Sox to death for their completely unbelievable collapse. I would be pissed, too, if the Yankees did the same thing. And yes, some of the players look like they did gain weight (Beckett and Lester most notably), but good God, just look at CC this season. I love the guy, but he regained all the weight he lost during the off-season. Other than from other NYY fans, I don't hear much chatter about his weight in the media. I get it, he performed when we needed him (for the most part) and rain isn't his fault. But still... I think part of the weight gain is the nature of the life of a baseball player... tons of take-out and eating out regardless of where it comes from.

Wow........Boston media is really THAT desperate right now? With photo angles and such you can make anybody look bigger in one instance.
