I trust Pete Abraham. On the other hand, I'm annoyed at much of the rest of the Boston media. I don't think the pitchers owe me (a Red Sox) fan any explanation. We all saw what they did on the field; the record speaks for itself.

If they want to give interviews, it should be to clear their own reputations, not to apologize. There's pretty much nothing the starters can say that will excuse how they pitched.

The Red Sox story was news BEFORE this whole beer and fried chicken thing. It was news because a team that some estimated could win 100 games something they hadn't done since 1946 and had only done a total of 3 times since 1900, didn't even come close. It was news because they went 7-20 in September. It was news because they basically "fired" their manger who led them to 2 World Series Titles in 4 years. It was news because this Red Sox team that just a few months ago spent $300M on 2 players contracts to insure they would make the not only the post season but the World Series finished 3rd in the American League behind a team with a payroll 1/4 of theirs.
Finally it's continuing to be news not because of the beer and fried chicken thing but because no one in the organization is willing to "belly up to the bar" no pun intended and accept responsibility for why and how it happened. Other than to say "we just played bad baseball" in September. Well that part is obvious isn't it.

"The Jays have passed them and the Blue jays will next year."

I'm assuming you meant the Rays have passed them...it took a fluke collapse for the Rays to catch the Red Sox this year. How many times is something like that going to repeat, probably not very often...since if it did, it wouldn't have been such big news this year.

We'll see about the Blue Jays. I think they are still a few seasons from competing with the other AL East teams that don't reside in Baltimore.

This really is ridiculous. The team played awful baseball in September but because they happened to be drinking beer and eating chicken wings that becomes the main focus of their offseason. If this story had come out after they won the WS like everyone expected there wouldn't be a team without a beer cooler and a deep fryer in the clubhouse for the 2012 season

Good for Lester for showing up. It took a lot, obviously, to do this.

These comments today w/ the Globe came from a phone call. There was no actual recording given, so even though there is more to follow tomorrow, who knows what Abraham left out? I tend to be very wary of some of these 'stories' these days, because things are taken out of context and quotes misleading.

I'm not saying he's a hero, by any means. A lot of regret is within him. At least he made that first step. And even though more 'sources' say otherwise, I don't care. He took a step and looked at his role in this mess. Good for him.

Just because he doesn't say exactly what I would say or do exactly what I would do, doesn't mean that his comments don't count. If he gets tarred and feathered for taking responsibility, in any capacity, who else on the team would bother coming forward?

I cannot ever in my 45 years recall such a public mess. This kind of activity has been going on since The Babe played, probably before. The airing of greviences is coming from up top. This is disgusting, the Sox are starting to look like a bunch chumps. The lovely thing about baseball is that on the 15th of Feburary all will be forgiven.

Lost in this is the broader discussion of baseball conditioning. I commented the other day the the great and powerful Beane believes that this the next area of value to pursue, that is, having better conditioned ballplayers. He believes having players conditioned more like English Premier League players (who look like our baseball players from the '70's) will produce gains in performance and durability. Certainly a couple of the A's starters could use some conditioning. But if it works, then the Boston rotation will have to cut out the beer and fried chicken.

If only the Red Sox had a person on their team that could be a liaison between the manager and players. A veteran that is could have a personal relationship with pitchers and position players, a "Captain" if you will.

That "Captain" could see his peers behaving badly and intervene. Of Course, if this "Captain" is playing every inning of every game, he may not notice, so maybe the "Captain" could be a guy who played, I don't know, maybe 68 games during the season.

If the Red Sox had a guy like that, maybe they would not have lost 72 (!) games.
