Nothing personal against Rhodes, he seems like a pretty cool guy, but I for one was very relieved when the Rangers released him. You couldn’t exactly guarantee you would see one sail out of the park, but it happened often enough I would’ve placed bets on it if I was a gambling man. Rangers are having that problem now with Uehara, but as of today he’s left off the WS roster, so there will be no Rhodes-Uehara home-runathon.

I don’t know if they have to vote him a share (that’s definitely just the $), it’s usually team management/owners who have the final say (sometimes with input from the players) on how many rings are done – if I’m not mistaken, championship rings and banners and the like are usually paid for by the club, not MLB itself.

Arthur was a fan favorite here in Baltimore, and I for one am thrilled for him that he’s finally going to get a World Series ring. He’s more than earned it.

There would be something cool and symmetric having Rhodes striking out Hamilton to give the Cards the crown. He could retire victorious, vindicated, and venerated.

As a player I’m not sure how I’d feel about getting a ring after losing the WS, especially at such a late stage/the end of your career

It is entirely up to the team. Rhodes is not “guaranteed” anything. If the Rangers win (and I sure hope they do), the team has sole discretion of who gets a ring and even if they give out rings. It is not mandated by the league or the union or anything like that.

But by that same token, a guy could be a late August pickup and then never play a game in the playoffs (either via injury or bench role) and be more elligble for a ring than somebody who played games at some point.

What are the actual requirements for getting a ring? Does it vary team to team? Does the September callup that went 3 for 12 and didn’t play in the postseason get one?

Correct. In 2004, Nomar received a ring and partial playoff share because his former teammates on the Red Sox voted it for him. Theo presented the ring to him before the game the next season when the Sox played the Cubs at Wrigley.

Technically speaking, I don’t think he’s guaranteed a ring. Don’t the Rangers have to vote him a postseason share if they win for him to get it?

Tough to say, it’d be neat to see a list. I would think not since usually it’s teams that are out of the race that trade players away at the deadline, so it’s not like a player who is moved is likely to face his former ineffective team in the World Series.

Also, players who are placed on waivers after the deadline have the lowest priority of claims by the opposite league, making claims from teams in the same league more likely. Obviously, this also hurts the chances of a World Series match-up between a player’s current and former teams.

Hmm… I would like it more if there was some requirement that you had to be in any of the post-season rosters of the winning team (xLDS, xLCS, WS). Regular season is regular season and although you need to win enough games to make it, the impact is much much larger when you play the post-season.

There’s something wrong with being guaranteed a ring by the happy accident of having played in both WS participants in the regular season.
