You’ve gotta assume the Twins will be in the market for at least one of these two, right?! Mauer is no lock to stay healthy and although neither one is top tier starter, they can both produce enough to be suitable backups.

Exactly — he’d be a solid if not great DH; but I’d still have a separate defensive backup to Suzuki. No-mitt is a switch-hitting run producer with an .800+ OPS: this guy could command $8M+ per season in the AL. But anyone who’s seen him behind the plate knows that he is flat dangerous back there, and would be even as a backup C. If he stays in the NL he’ll need to move 90 ft. and learn to play 1b. But with a staff like the A’s are developing (that kid Gonzalez could be a future Cy candidate), you don’t want a defensive liability behind the plate, even part time.

I always thought Snyder was a bit underrated, but he’s certainly not worth $6.75 million, especially not on a team like the Pirates who won’t look to contend in 2012. Between Jaramillo, McKenry and Fryer, the Pirates have at least replacement-level catching options until Tony Sanchez is ready at the beginning of 2013 if not sometime next season.

“no-mitt Doumit” needs to find a home in the AL. Watching him behind the plate this season I was reminded of Angell’s classic description of Choo-Choo Coleman (“he played catcher like a man fending off a swarm of bees”). Clearly, Doumit’s bat will get him a job someplace, and the DH was made for a guy like him.
