He is a free agent, as he signed a minor league deal last year. They have about 10 million to spend this offseason on upgrades, and giving Kotch 4-5 million won’t allow them any upgrades. There are a lot of cheap young MLB ready first baseman under team control around the league, that are blocked by Vets. Alonso, Belt, and Morrison should all be on the Rays wish list. Shields is locked into a very team friendly contract for 3 more seasons, with team options of 7 8 and 9 million if I remember right.

If the Marlins want Shields, they better dangle a lot more than Morrison, as Shields’ contract makes him an extremely valuable trade chip.

I’ve been dreading Slobbering Ozzie teaming up with Krazy Karlos. If Tweeter is the price for a solid top three guy for the rotation, so be it – likable guy, and he ran some entertaining patterns in the outfield as if his feet were mounted on one of those swivel platforms on the wind-up Bulldog Tank toys, but you really didn’t want him coming up with two down and the game on the line. I think his RISP was something like .146 last time I looked, and that was before their last couple of series of the season.
