All of this phony drama has nothing to do with Theo Epstein as GM - it has to do with Theo Epstein wanting a higher rank or title in the organization. He would never be President/CEO in Boston, as the 2005 contract kerfuffle caused John Henry to make Theo do baseball operations only and Lucchino do baseball business only.

Epstein had to move on to get what he wanted - and the Cubs are a perefect opportunity.

As for Francona, a poor September and the apparent loss of clubhouse discipline (by veterans off all things) clinched his departure. And remember that John Henry was not returning messages from Francona for over a month during the demise.

The eventual decision(s) to terminate Francona and agree to Epstein's departure were made by John Henry.

There are a lot of mixed emotions regarding Theo, myself included.

As either Henry or Lucchino said (ugh, I can't believe I'm quoting them), there is a shelf life to the effectiveness of any GM within an organization (aside from Cashman, apparently).

At some point, some fresh thinking and ideas need to take over. We'll see how it plays out.

Totally agree about Tito...great guy, but the same principle. He lost the ability to reach his entitled, spoiled players.

As far as I'm concerned, though, he has nothing left to prove.

I'm not sure about Theo being missed, but they'll have a hard time replacing Tito. The guy's a players manager, and was the fall guy in Boston. I hope the best for him, a class guy all the way.
