Great moments in bullpen phone miscommunication

bullpen-phone

This story from Bob Elliott is fun. Game cancelled because of rain, so old guys tell stories about stuff in the press box and around the ballpark.  The topic: other bullpen phone failures in baseball history. Some technical, some just miscommunications and weirdness.

My favorite: the time in 1983 when Braves manager Joe Torre called down for a lefty … and there were no lefties. Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre managing the defending NL West champs, and he doesn’t know that he doesn’t have any lefties.

Fantastic.

Reminds me of another great moment in “eye black” (shoe polish) history: an old M*A*S*H episode where Col. Potter is tricked into using binoculars with black paste on the sight rings. He ends up looking like a raccoon when he lowers the binoculars after looking through them.

You could easily imagine eye black appearing on 30 different bullpen phones next season after reading this great story.

Squeezing a Col. Potter/ M*A*S*H reference into a Baseball post about telephones. +1.

Whoever thought up the headline for the story deserves a cookie.

Any story that leads with the ’93 series is a good one. I distinctly remember sitting there saying “WTF? Lefty fool, a lefty!” then the Jays start the come back.
