If my team is getting crushed – as the Feesh frequently were last season – I don’t mind at all if they start stumbling around, running into each other, running the bases the wrong way and throwing up from time to time. If the game itself has ceased to entertain, hell, I say, let it all hang out and let’s have some laughs.

Some years back, the Disney Corporation discovered that the workers building Disneyland in France were drinking wine at lunch and banned the practice. The workers, almost unanimously, walked off the job. Disney backed off. There you have the Mouseketeer’s version of the “French Paradox.”

I live in the Tampa area, so I get a steady dose of Joe Maddon pretty much most of the year. Part of me can’t stand the guy because he always comes across as knowing ‘everything’. But a part of me loves the guy because he’s straight forward, and says what he thinks with no regard for whether or not you like what he says. Kind of refreshing.

On this point, I have to agree with him. How hypocritical can you be to ban beer from clubhouses, yet have it be your #1 concessions money-maker for 7 innings per night among your fan base? Boston media… get over it. You lost. There’s always next year. Heck, you waited 86 years for a title. Miss the playoffs once due to a bad streak and you’ve got to find someone, or something, to blame? Please…

My guess is that for police, firefighters, doctors and school teachers drinking on the job is against the law. Business people drink on the job all the time- have you looked at the economy lately?

Then by Maddon and Cacaterra’s logic, cops, firemen, doctors, school teachers, business people should all be allowed to drink on the job, right? These ball players are AT WORK! They don’t need to be drinking on the job. If you’re going to have beer in the clubhouse, make sure it’s off limits until AFTER the game.

It’s not going to happen. Does anyone have a clue as to how much money is pumped into teams by beer companies? How much money does MLB directly benefit from Budweiser? The “debate” over this is laughable imo. They’ll only be allowed to drink sponsored beers, before it’s banned.

I think most beer is consumed after the games or after a player has come out of a game. It would be naive to think a few players didn’t occasionally “crack open” a brew even while they were still playing but I doubt that happens very often.

I don’t get how it’s a good idea to let players drink during a game. It’s not the same thing as being a fan in the seats. If I am a fan, quite frankly, I want my team sober during a game.
