Baseball did not go gently into that good night. More than once last night, Baseball stepped up to the abyss that is the long, cold off-season and said, not yet. Just one more inning, then one more game.

Baseball gave me what I wanted, a Game 7. Don’t care who wins, just hope it’s a good game.

I remember when the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl a few years ago, they had brought all of those stupid “Patriots Super Bowl Champs!” t-shirts and hats down to the sideline to give to the players right when the game ends. When the Giants came back, they had to frantically wheel all that stuff away and bring down the Giants’ version.

It’s common. It happened to the 86′ Sox. They looked like they were going to be champs and the bubbly was rolled into the clubhouse and preparations made. When things fell apart the staff was frantically moving the stuff out.

To be fair, LaRussa didn’t actually call to remind his relievers of the postgame event. His exact words were, “Get Rzepcynski warming up,” but someone in the bullpen misheard that as, “When we lose, remind the guys to stick around for an event in which we thank our fans.” It’s a mistake anyone could have made.
