Bryce Harper Tebows

Oct 31, 2011, 2:32 PM EDT

This is the most inevitable thing in the history of things. Via MLB.com, here’s Bryce Harper’s new Twitter avatar:

I know it’s fun to hate on Tim Tebow — I totally get it — but I’d bet that, in person, Harper is about 10,000 times more insufferable than Tebow.

He really defines most people’s stereotype of the immature, overly jocky ballplayer.

    • aaronmoreno - Oct 31, 2011 at 2:41 PM

Or anybody’s stereotype of a teenager.

      • mgflolox - Oct 31, 2011 at 6:06 PM

No kidding. Let’s be honest, how many of us weren’t complete jackasses at age 19?

    • skids003 - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:36 PM

      Yep, he’s a real turd.

  2. rollinghighwayblues - Oct 31, 2011 at 2:42 PM

Does this guy do something every other week that makes he seem like the world’s biggest douche? God.

  3. halladaysbiceps - Oct 31, 2011 at 2:47 PM

Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I strike that same pose. I like flexing my bicepts, like Harper.

    • hotkarlsandwich - Oct 31, 2011 at 2:57 PM

How do you misspell “biceps”. It is in your username. Sorry I just found that kind of ironic.

      • halladaysbiceps - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:00 PM

Long story. I did it on purpose.

  4. Jonny 5 - Oct 31, 2011 at 2:56 PM

This kid…… He seems to think very highly of himself. And that’s not his fault.

    • clydeserra - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:15 PM

      Good point

    • skids003 - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:37 PM

Alot of it is his fault. He’s a butthead.

  5. frenchysplatediscipline - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:00 PM

Can’t wait til he gets to the Majors and has to face someone like Carpenter.

One of his coaches in the minors may want to advise him to buy some body armor for his at bats in the bigs…

    • bleedgreen - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:24 PM

I can’t wait till he has to face Halladay, Hamels, Lee and Worley next year (If they promote him that fast)

  6. philliesblow - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:12 PM

One reason to keep interleague play – the hope that Velander can blow 2 past his chin at 101 MPH then make him bail like a school girl on a curve ball.

    • mgflolox - Oct 31, 2011 at 6:16 PM

He bats left-handed, he’s not bailing on Verlander’s curve.

  7. yankeesgameday - Oct 31, 2011 at 3:21 PM

At the very least Tebow has some guns on him. Bryce needs to hit the gym. Little girly arms.

    Two comments.

    1. Harper is only the 1,000’th person to do this. There’s other athletes and other people in spades mocking Tebow. Its a funny pose, if only because clearly Tebow takes himself far to seriously and deserves the mocking. Why the hate just for Harper?

    2. Craig, your “insufferable in person” comment is completely unfair. If you don’t know for sure, keep your mouth shut. I don’t know if Harper is a completely pr*ck or if he’s the nicest guy in the world, so I’ll never say one way or the other.

The only way you can pass judgement is to look what others have said. Keith Law, mr obnoxious/sarcastic himself, wrote in a chat that he’s never found Harper to be cocky or obnoxious, not in person or on the field. http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/40823/mlb-insider-keith-law

Every columnist who I’ve read who has interviewed the guy reports he’s an intense, driven player loyal to family and striving hard (sometimes too hard) to succeed. Google bryce harper and washington post, or washington post magazine to find some features where someone’s actually taken the time to interview him and his family before just assuming that he’s such an awful person. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/10/AR2011031005325.html is one such article.

You want us to give Harper the benefit of the doubt because we don’t “know” him….but not extend the same courtesey to Tebow?

      • vanmorrissey - Oct 31, 2011 at 5:04 PM

Thank you, exactly. And who has a picture of themself in the pose and then sends it out, like anyone really cares.

    • clydeserra - Oct 31, 2011 at 5:01 PM

Hometown reporters writing fluff pieces about new player? Surely this changes everyone’s mind.

Seriously though, he may be a nice kid that is misunderstood because he has been so much better than his peers that his peers go after him relentlessly.

We have seen some of that already in HBT, like the blowing kiss story where he was caught blowing kisses to a pitcher he just homered off of. There were reports in that one of the other team mocking harper previously. That would suck as a teenager and I think many would react like Harper did.

But that fact remains, he has been in the public eye since the SI article a few years ago. You would think that, if he were at all concerned about not being viewed as a total tool, he would take some actions to not be as mockable as he has been for the past 4 years. I would hope his agent has a few ideas on how to clean up his image. He will be a free agent before he can rent a car after all.

Wonderful, it’s just been too long since we had a post cheap-shotting Bryce Harper. He may be immature and not the very model of young American manhood, but this was uncalled for.

  10. crpls - Oct 31, 2011 at 6:10 PM

What’s funny is that all the people being douches in the comments are infinitely worse than anything Harper has done so far.

  11. stoutfiles - Oct 31, 2011 at 6:14 PM

I don’t mind laughing at Tebow some, but making fun of him for praying? How is that supposed to be funny? I don’t believe in God but I still find it horrible to laugh at someone for following their faith.

    • crpls - Oct 31, 2011 at 6:25 PM

Is it wrong to mock people who espouse their belief publicly on shows like Ancient Aliens?
