I don’t mind laughing at Tebow some, but making fun of him for praying? How is that supposed to be funny? I don’t believe in God but I still find it horrible to laugh at someone for following their faith.

Hometown reporters writing fluff pieces about new player? Surely this changes everyone’s mind.

Seriously though, he may be a nice kid that is misunderstood because he has been so much better than his peers that his peers go after him relentlessly.

We have seen some of that already in HBT, like the blowing kiss story where he was caught blowing kisses to a pitcher he just homered off of. There were reports in that one of the other team mocking harper previously. That would suck as a teenager and I think many would react like Harper did.

But that fact remains, he has been in the public eye since the SI article a few years ago. You would think that, if he were at all concerned about not being viewed as a total tool, he would take some actions to not be as mockable as he has been for the past 4 years. I would hope his agent has a few ideas on how to clean up his image. He will be a free agent before he can rent a car after all.

You want us to give Harper the benefit of the doubt because we don’t “know” him….but not extend the same courtesey to Tebow?

Two comments.

1. Harper is only the 1,000′th person to do this. There’s other athletes and other people in spades mocking Tebow. Its a funny pose, if only because clearly Tebow takes himself far to seriously and deserves the mocking. Why the hate just for Harper?

2. Craig, your “insufferable in person” comment is completely unfair. If you don’t know for sure, keep your mouth shut. I don’t know if Harper is a completely pr*ck or if he’s the nicest guy in the world, so I’ll never say one way or the other.

The only way you can pass judgement is to look what others have said. Keith Law, mr obnoxious/sarcastic himself, wrote in a chat that he’s never found Harper to be cocky or obnoxious, not in person or on the field. http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/40823/mlb-insider-keith-law

Every columnist who I’ve read who has interviewed the guy reports he’s an intense, driven player loyal to family and striving hard (sometimes too hard) to succeed.
