Haters vacate. Bonds is the best.

Regardless of how this came about, Bonds is, in a way, allowing others to share in his generosity while at the same time providing for the education of a couple of kids who’s lives will never be the same. So long as those kids have the chance to go on in life to greater things, do I really care how this does or does not reflect upon Barry Bonds? Nope, not so much…but I’m glad he did what he did and I do think better of him for it. Not least because it gives all of us a chance to now do the same thing in some measure.

You say “I’m not questioning Barry’s intentions or sincerity. ” but if you refer to YOUR first post you state “Now, Barry wants to cut his costs down …” that is exactly what I would call questioning someone sincerity.

You later state ” I never had any opinion with him off the field” but then IN THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE you state “the only negatives with Bonds that I am aware of is his obvious steroid use and that many of his teammates didn’t like him.” These are both off the field issues.

If you remember multiple stories with that exact quote saying Barry paying for all of the kids’ tuition then show them. If not, you can’t claim that it is so. You make a claim, you have to back it up.

Remember that one time when you left HBT in a huff? Those were some great days.

Wait a sec, this news doesn’t fit into the already created narrative about Bonds at all. Hmmm… We must find some way to spin this as a negative! He’s history’s greatest monster!!!

Bonds may not be an attractive character to those who mostly interacted with him through the national media, and the criticism he received is fair. But the man has done nothing but good in the Bay Area community, and his money flows freely through charities in the area. It’s rarely publicized but the guy has invested a lot of money and time into the Bay Area.

He may be a prick and a cheater, but he’s also a stand-up citizen. The Stow charity is just one example.

How about finding one then? If you’re going to lambaste a guy for trying to doing something awesome, you need to provide something better than anecdotal evidence.

It apparently only appeared that way in the minds of the journalists looking to punch up a story. No one in a position to actually know is on the record.

I’m not questioning Barry’s intentions or sincerity. I merely was stating it appeared he was going to pay the full amount of their tuition. Now, that appears not to be the case.

Truth be told, I never had any opinion with him off the field. The only negatives with Bonds that I am aware of is his obvious steroid use and that many of his teammates didn’t like him. Other than that, I have no issues with him.

And yet none of the stories I saw at the time contained any direct quotes from Bonds or his legal representatives as to the exact nature and structure of the gift. Since we don’t really know, let’s speculate a bit like the good gossip mongers that we are.

Suppose Bonds sets up a trust fund for the kids and funds it with $50K of his own dough. Today, that could fund a basic college education at a number of state schools with in-state tuition. Depending on how the fund is invested, it may or may not grow sufficiently to provide complete coverage at a school of each child’s choice when they are of college age. It’s undeniable that the initial $50K is a generous gift and the principal that results after years of growth even more so. But prudence dictates that, if possible, one might wish to add to the initial invest to ensure that the desire to fund their education at a college of their choice is realized.

When the Stow kids come of age, they will go to college knowing that not only did the greatest Giant of his generation provide for them, but he used the power of his name to broaden that support throughout Giant (and baseball) fandom and beyond. Pretty good win-win for everyone.

But feel free to keep trying to turn Bonds’ gift into a lump of coal.

Either way, their tuition will be taken care of, and that’s all that counts.

Now, Barry wants to cut his costs down and has created a college fund to defer some of the money out of his own pocket? It seems to me one of Bond’s accountant’s probably told Bonds what the cost of college tuition is going to be in 10 years and maybe it wasn’t such a great idea.
