Dear trolls — Even I respect the Cardinals organization enough to know that they would never interview/hire someone to “piss off Cubs fans”. I know that despite winning the World Series, you still insist on measuring your team against the toilet-dwelling Cubs, but perhaps it’s time to get over it. If Sandberg is the right fit for the right time, they will hire him. As they should.

Living in the midwest and a reader of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for over 3 decades, let me clue you in on an observation of mine.

St. Louis the club, the organization, the press, the fans, are masters of subtlety, artful in misdirection,
and employ these small moves out of zeal for baseball superiority.
There is not much they won’t do to win, but always tactful and almost never blatantly crossing the lines. They love baseball too much there to jeopardize any out, inning, game, series, or season, with blatantly uncouth behavior. 99.9%

St. Louis fans are some of the most courteous and respectful hosts you will ever encounter should you take in a game there under the arch. Let’s hope that never changes.

(All this from someone who is NOT a fan of any of the following, Astros, Brewers, Cards, Cubs, Reds, or Pirates.

Not that minor league records mean anything but I don’t think he has any minor league championships. He has a Manager of the Year (2010) in the PCL.

I don’t believe Sandberg would have great success at the MLB level right away, nor do I think he would be accepted very easily in St Louis because of the type of fans you are mocking. From what I have heard/read, he has the skills to be a good manager someday, but I don’t believe a first year manager would be picked for the “win now” type of attitude the Cardinals have every year with Oquendo being possibly the only exception. I think it will come down to someone with more experience (Gardenhire, Maddon, Riggleman, Francona?) regardless of their recent track records.

If Sandberg were to go to a rebuilding franchise and have moderate success, I don’t think Cards fans would be opposed to him in a few years. And if I haven’t made it obvious, yes I am a Cards fan.

Doesn’t Ryno have two AAA championships now – one in PCL and one in IL? Not that its anything like the bigs, but he can’t be aweful. Not saying he’s the best choice either – just that its not stupid to take a look at him.

Absolutely Astro. I would take it a step further however. I have always heard….and felt (with a few exceptions of course)…former players of any caliber (espeically really good ones) rarely make good Coaches or Managers. I don’t care if it’s Baseball, Football or Basketball. Hell…throw Hockey and Soccer in their too.

I’d rather not have a former star player as a manager. Some article I read long ago, pointed out they don’t have the mind set and attitude as someone who was a bench or role player, learning a lot about the game from the dugout. I know there are exceptions, Torre, Piniella, etc., but unless they’re a Player/Manager I’d rather have Oquendo or Francona

Grooming is not the same as cloning. Ask any Korean cloning specialist/pet boarder. Are you a clone of your dad? Or do you just have some of the same mannerisms? They’re (obviously) completely different people. I don’t think Oquendo would make 15,000 pitching changes in his career or start 160 different lineups a season.

And regarding Sandberg, if you’d rather toil in mediocrity because you don’t want a Cubs hero from 20 years ago then…

Also, I am not completely sold on Oquendo. TLR has been grooming him and I don’t really want a TLR clone. And if he is as good at managerial decisions as knowing when to hold runners it may not work out too well.

I think its a great move. Pisses of Cubs fans and helps Sandberg get his name out there as a big league candidate. I doubt the Cards would actually hire him, but they can’t interview nobody, and if Sandberg gets a managerial job somewhere else in the NL he will still get to face the Cubs.
