Well, if you think he’s on the DL half the year, that wouldn’t create a roster space issue, and the Rays in particular squeeze some extra roster space out of Zobrist’s versatility. What’s more important to Tampa, a fifth outfielder, a twelfth pitcher, or a competent DH-platoon?

Doumit will be in AL as part time catcher/ DH. I say Seattle, Oakland or Minnesota..

There’s not a lot of roster space free to get a platoon DH who cannot take the field, and won’t be available half the year.

Awkward as in Emmit Smith in Arizona, Michael Jordan in Washington, Rickey Henderson in about 47 different places. He could have had a storybook ending but is going to hang on for the $ as Pancho points out. It makes sense financially for Thome and he’ll hit a few home runs for team, but it’s still awkward.

Why should they get awkward? He’s still plenty productive as the long half of a DH platoon. He makes a ton of sense in Tampa, where his non-defense wouldn’t hurt the team and his lefty thump would be much appreciated or in Texas, pushing Michael Young into a DH platoon with the added benefit of watching him throw yet another shit-fit because the club reduced his role in an effort to make the team on the field better. Of course, knowing Ron Washington, he’s probably platoon with Mike Napoli despite the fact that Napoli still rakes against RHP, something Young does not.

Betemit could be a decent fit for the Twins, especially if the lose Cuddyer. He could serve as insurance for Morneau at 1B and squeak out the occasional start at 3B over Valencia.
