That’s why I’m wary of this decision and grow considerably more concerned with the Pujols situation.

Smart owners stay out of the way….the more the Red Sox owners become involved, the more screwed up they become….when Steinbrenner was most involved with Yankee decisions, they sucked….Angelos has screwed up the Orioles, Loria continues to screw up the Marlins….the more any owner is involved in real decisions, the worse it is for the organization….because they really have no idea what they are doing.

Dewitt’s on “the committee” and holds the purse strings so it’s a safe bet he’s gonna have final say – especially when we’re talking about the difference in cost between Francona and the cost of one of the other non experienced guys mentioned.

I sure as hell hope that DeWitt isn’t making the decision….somebody that knows something about baseball should be making such decisions….that is why owners hire GMs and such.

Francona definitely has some appeal, no doubt.

That said, the ordeal in Boston was just so ugly I’m not sure if he’s the guy who would command the respect necessary in that clubhouse.

I love Oquendo but he’s 48 and has interviewed for 3 other big league clubs with no offer.
Matheny has alot of organizational appeal but he’s never done anything coaching wise beyond spring training and I’m not ready for the keys of the Cardinals to be handed off to Sandberg or McEwing.

This will definitely be interesting to watch shake out, it’s (beyond resigning Albert) the biggest decision Dewitt will make in his tenure as owner.

He better not fuck it up….

It is the lack of information that makes me concerned…but at the same time, makes it difficult to be totally against a particular candidate. If we could just have them fill out a simple and short questionaire, I could have much stronger opinions.

I say hire Jim Edmonds. What he lacks in managerial experience, he’ll make up for it in getting more Cardinals to wear half shirts and leaping out of the batters box at pitches four feet outside.

That being said, I actually amazed at how little I care who the Cardinals hire. Francona is a known quality, but Sandberg? Oquendo? Matheny? None of us has any idea what their managing philosophy is or what they’ll bring to the table. There is an awful lot of hand wringing about a subject that anyone who is honest with themselves will admit they know very little about. For all I know, Oquendo may love nothing more than bunts and the hit and run.

They could do worse than Francona….it just feels like Oquendo has put in his time and deserves a shot….hiring someone else would just feel wrong, and would certainly mean he was gone from the organization….which would suck.

I would rather them hire a first-time manager than a re-tread, and (for multiple reasons) I would rather they hire a guy under 45 than an older one.

Oquendo is the logical choice since he’s paid his dues in house and knows the team. Francona would be nice but that might be unreal expectations, following LaRussa and a World Series winner.
