When Scott pitched a no-hitter late in the season, I remember watching a highlight tape showing him pitching to the final batter. The ball seemed to be doing corkscrews on the way to the plate! darting in, out, up, down. It was fascinating and obviously I’ve never forgotten it.

8/7/2009: Carlos Beltran hit a foul ball of Jaime Moyer behind the Mets dugout that I caught at Citi Field. I was 27 years old at the time and an office manager in New York. After show the ball around and getting grunt of dismissive interest from people in the seats nearby, I sat down to examine my prize. It was a rosin bag that Jaime Moyer was throwing instead of the baseball. Thus solving the riddle of his inexplicable ability to remain a Major League pitcher at the age of 73.

8/22/88, Andre Dawson hit a foul ball off Mike Scott down the left-field line that I caught at Wrigley Field. I was 11 years-old at the time and a pitcher in Little League. After showing the ball around and getting my congratulations from people in the seats nearby I sat down to examine my prize. There were three clear straight-line scuffs equidistant from one another on that ball. It was clear to me then that Mike Scott was cheating, I can’t believe he was never actually caught doing it. It wasn’t subtle…

My recollection at that time was that Alan Ashby was being accused of using the buckle on his shinguards to scuff the ball……and that even the Ryan Express wasn’t above resorting to the chicanery on occasion.
