Frankly, I think the A’s should have done this about 3 years ago. Bring the kids up and let them play. At least you find out who’s gonna make and who’s not. And if you have a terrible W/L record, at least you get a high draft pick. I figure, if you don’t have a realistic shot to contend, find out who are the pieces of your next good team. I’m getting tired of watching a 75-80 win team every year. I’d rather see a team lose 95 games with a young, hustling team than a mediocre team with a bunch of players with no upside.

Wow-glad to know the A’s pitchers-or at least Gio-excite some positive opinion throughout the league, or at least among the HBT commentariat. Keep in mind, though, that Mr. Anderson is by far the most talented of the bunch, though he will have to test his arm when he comes back. Also, Dallas Braden can be had much more cheaply.

Why not take them all? New York could slot them in 2-5. Toronto could keep two and deal two (the two who will then battle it out for Cy Young 2012, with Toronto’s luck). And Texas could take two and keep the other two in reserve for late in the season when their main guys get tired from that inferno weather.

Or maybe not. You see, the whole idea is that somewhere, the Great and Powerful Beane has to have a plan. Now maybe the plan isn’t altogether baked, maybe it’s just a glimmer, but he has one essential thing missing: do the A’s move or not. That determines whether he “goes young” while the stadium is being built, or whether he goes ultra cheap on free agents, even cheaper than he has gone lately, which approach has led to the lovely spectacle of 1/4 filled dates and third or fourth place finishes.

But let there be no doubt: the As make a profit. Lew Wolff, co-owner and managing general partner, and more importantly, friend of Bud from long ago, collects his revenue sharing and local TV money and takes it to the bank, spending very little of that on payroll or operations. Even with the terrible attendance at the Mausoleum (not located in a ghetto, but on the freeway), that attendance still generates about $ 60M gross to the club, even with Al Davis’ cut of parking and concessions. That’s just about payroll, after the A’s deal guys mid-year.

As for Jemile Weeks, he’s exciting, but my guess is Beane would trade him in a heart beat if the price were right.

The Jays could easily offer David Cooper (PCL Batting Champ) plus a left fielder for Gonzalez. Thee 2 teams have a history of trading with eachother.

From this Yankee fans perspective IF the A’s are willing to entertain offers for Gio Gonzlaez I can certainly see him being on the Yankees radar screen.

Before we get to APBA’s insightful opinion let me just let it be known how welcome Gio Gonzalez would be to the Beaver Men? He can even star in the Made For TV Movie of Alex Anthopolous’s unlikely run to the post season; “LoonieBall”. Yes, needing a new stadium; the new market inefficiency.

Does this meet a legal or at the very least a contractual definition of extortion? Wah Wah Wah You haven’t given us permission to move and get a free stadium, so we’ll continue to drive nails in the coffin of what could be an interesting/competitive team until we get what we want.
Capitalism is OK when it’s not driven by unbridled greed. Unfortunately, Bud also subscribes to the “greed” value system so don’t expect any action from that source.

You do know that John Fisher, the Oakland owner and heir to the Gap fortune, is worth 1.5 billion right? He also coincidentally owns a small stake in the San Jose MLS team. The ownership of this team is tanking the team on purpose because they don’t want to play in Oakland anymore. Can you blame the fans for not showing up when they know the owner is not negotiating in good faith? As a Seattle Supersonic fan, I can totally emphasize. You can’t tell me there isn’t somewhere in Oakland that would be suitable to a new stadium.

I think Beane’s making a statement that if they can’t move, he might as well deal any millionaire on that team because pretty soon they won’t be able to afford anyone, and it’s not like anyone goes to see the players anyway in Oakland.

Allan, you’re all googly for the owners, right? Do Lew and Billy a favor, if I may vastly understate, and get them the hell out of there already.

You’ve got the Wilipons being favored through their financial dark times, an imploding douchebag in Los Angeles, a tough-loser prick in Boston who won’t just finish the deal for his former employee, a guy in Houston who’s been waiting months to buy a team nobody else wants, an old jackass in Miami who FINALLY is opening his wallet now that he got a new ballpark that maybe 20,000 folks will go to a night, and on top of ALL of this, you’ve had a starving Oakland team for years and years that just wants to not have their players and fans go to a garbage bin in the ghetto to see a game.

Wake up, Commish.
