The Cardinals interviewed Mike Matheny, not Terry Francona, for manager today

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that while the Cardinals interviewed former catcher and fan favorite Mike Matheny for their managerial vacancy today, they didn’t meet with Terry Francona.

John Dennis of WEEI in Boston, who was all over the Theo Epstein situation, reported yesterday that Francona was en route to St. Louis for an interview, but that apparently didn’t happen. However, it’s not yet clear if the Cardinals simply intend to interview the former Red Sox manager at a later date or if he is no longer under consideration for the job.

In addition to Matheny, the Cardinals met this week with Triple-A Memphis manager Chris Maloney and new White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing. More candidates could surface in the coming days, but Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo and Cubs legend and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg are also expected to get interviews.

I caught an interview with Matheny on ESPN101 Radio St Louis earlier this evening, came off very well.

Beyond some insight on the interview with Mozeilak and Dewitt, he said he’s headed out of the country tomorrow to do some charity work along with Albert – that sure won’t hurt his chances…

Audio of Matheny from the interview on ESPN101 STL can be heard here:

I wonder if Matheny gets hired if God will tell Albert to sign?

Hire Ryno. Cubs fans would puke in unison.

As a Cardinals fan, so would I…

There has to be a reason (other than Epstein being immediately infected with the Cubs virus upon entering the building) Sandberg was passed over without a look-see by Theo.

What about Ted Simmons as a potential candidate?!?! Come on Cardinals. He has a lot more overall experience than Matheny if you are looking strictly at former Redbirds.

I think they are looking for some stability….it seems like Simmons changes positions and organizations every year or two.

Beyond the job hopping, Simba’s in his early 60’s and has experienced health issues of late as well.

Good basball guy, just not a match for the Cards.

Without a strong on field managerial presence to keep the front office on it’s toes this
regime could very well turn into the abyss experienced between the Herzog and TLR years.

Translation – Mo and Dewitt scare the hell outta me left to their own devices.
