I actually ran into conflicting info on that one. MLBTR included him in their arbitration estimates, but Cot’s has him with a team option for next season, which could make sense given that he got that major-league contract when he was drafted. The option wouldn’t necessarily mean he’s not still under control past next year.

Cot’s:
4 years/$7.285M (2007-10), plus 2011-12 club options
signed Major League contract with Detroit 8/14/07
$3.58M signing bonus
07:$0.38M, 08:$1.1M, 09:$1.2M, 10:$1.025M, 11:$1.536 club option, 12:$1.344M club option

Not only are the Tigers a certified 95 win team – it’s a 67 loss team; throw in the post season and the number climbs all the way to a 73 loss team – but they also become a 101 win team – all these new metrics have got me plumb tired out – I used to remember when it was just wins and losses.

Craig, I’m not sure I quite agree with your math. Cot’s has the nine players under contract coming in at $82.875 million. That doesn’t include Porcello’s incredibly affordable option. Factoring in that and MLBTR’s arbitration estimates, and I get $97.219 million for fourteen players. Jackson, Boesch, Fister, Avila, Perry and Alburquerque all make the minimum, so that’s about $100 million for twenty players. The last five spots are basically depth, and thus won’t cost that much to fill. If Dombrowski wanted to make a run at Reyes, the Tigers could afford that, and shifting Peralta to third is a big step forward for defense at shortstop while putting Brandon Inge into a reserve role he’s probably more suited for. In fact, the presence of Peralta and Inge probably makes the Tigers an even better fit for Reyes, because they won’t be completely screwed if/when his hammies act up.

I’m not sure that’s a 95 win team, though I guess any of the five teams in that division MIGHT win 95 games with the crummy competition.
