I think you are way off that he “unequivocally stated their were no incentives.”

Bonuses are allowed for playing time, All-Star Game appearances, or receiving awards (or placing in the voting for awards)….but players can’t receive bonuses for hitting a certain number of HRs, or striking out a certain number of guys or any other such thing.

I watched the press conference yesterday. Thome was specifically asked by Howard Eskin if there were any incentives in his contract. Thome stated unequivocally stated their were no incentives. Could Thome have not known the details of his own contract?
