But it’s not just the U.S. media. It’s the media the world over, plus international sporting bodies, non-sporting international competitive organizations, the International Monetary Fund. It’s not like NBC are the bad guys here. Take it up with China and their bad behavior.

I work with people from Taiwan. Its a neverending source of frustration for them to have US media continue to refer to their country as a part of China. The media in Taiwan is somewhat split on the issue, mainland China funds some of their media, and as a result some of it uses their preffered name for the island. But that is not public sentiment, and they have repeatedly rejected leaders or legislation that would unify them with the mainland.

Its very different in Puerto Rico. PR can leave the US at any time with a simple vote. We have no hold over them and do not block them from joining the UN or assert that they are our soverign land. PR is a territory, and like any territory they have the right to join or leave at will with no claims by the US.

I can see your point, but to suggest that it’s “incredibly offensive” is a little over the top. It’s somewhat akin to the U.S. demanding that Puerto Rico be known as “American Puerto Rico” in international competition. It’s certainly China’s intent to create an air of ownership with regard to Taiwan by pressuring the international community to refer to Taiwan as “Chinese Taipei” in international competition, and in that sense one can understand the annoyance/anger of Taiwanese people over the issue. But that said, Taiwanese media outlets (admittedly I looked it up on Wikipedia) don’t even universally refer to their teams as the Taiwan team, so to hold HardballTalk to a higher standard than Taiwan’s own media seems a little excessive.

Is it incredibly offensive when the Olympic team is called th Chinese Taipei Olympic Team? Of their international swim team? Or the team they send to the World Baseball Classic?

This was a Taiwan team, there is no such thing as “Chinese Taipei”. Show some respect. None of the players in Taiwan thought they were playing for “Chinese Taipei” nor did thier uniforms say any such thing.

I watched a couple of games. To say the least, it was an underwhelming series.

That’s no team of MLB stars, with an exception of a couple of players. They should have just called it “MLB Players” vs. Taiwan. The Phillies would have wiped the floor against this group of MLB players.
