Clemens was an ineffective .500 pitcher over the last few years of his Sox contract. Vaughn was a juicer and never lived up to the contract the Angels gave him. granted Clemens found the fountain of ‘roids and turned the clock back a decade, but Duquette had them both pegged as aging stars in the twilight of their careers and not worth the money. I’m no Duquette apologist, but he shouldn’t get skewered over how he handled Vaughn and Clemens.

They had to get someone 10 years removed from the game; Duquette was the only candidate who didn’t figure out just how bad the damage is before signing.

They had to hire someone and Duquette was the last man standing. Since he has not been in MLB for several years, he might be a bit rusty.

There should be an award for the post of “GM job that no one wants”. Annually given out to the least envied GM in MLB. They can call it the “Duquette Award”.
