This is what the Mets should have done with Pagan last offseason. Instead, he embarrassed himself in CF, lost any & all worth as a trade chip & is probably going to be a Met for life. THANKS SANDY

trade a guy who had “worst walk rate for anybody in baseball”, was “a big disappointment”, a big salary that would be “very expensive to retain” in the best possible case scenario and a “lock” to be “a goner”

for a guy who had a “career year” and is “more valuable”, “poised to give the team better numbers” over what the Giants had already.

So if this trade sets the market price on mercurial lefties with BB issues as a CF/Corner OF with moderate skills + kids, can the boutique version of this trade also happen, sending Brett Gardner to Oakland for Gio Gonzalez and a couple prospects?

Previous headline says “Royals get Jonathan Sanchez from Giants for Melky Cabrera”. Guess that sums up HPT’s take on the deal. If they liked it from the Giant’s perspective, I guess it would be “Giants get Cabrera for Sanchez”. That said, I don’t think it’s obvious which side will make out better on the deal. As commenters on the previous story mentioned, both players have shown promise, but have only shown flashes of fulfilling said promise. I think there is less risk in taking the position player, but there is more upside in acquiring the pitcher. I guess we’ll see in a year or two.

Good move. Melky overachieved and has not been able to put together consistent years like this year. Royals need to lock down Chen and sign a couple more pitchers.
