I DO think the majority of Cuban defectors (Latin American players generally) lie about their age. Hey if a couple years makes the difference between a $20M contract or a $40M contract, wouldn’t you? Look at Juan Carlos Oviedo/Leo Nunez – The guy took a buddy’s whole identity (and it netted him an extra couple hundred grand). The record keeping in that area of the world is notoriously unreliable, and age makes a big difference in the attractiveness of a player. Just pragmatism on the player’s part, but teams have to be cautious of it.

Gayrod cheated the game and should always be made fun of for being a douche bag. The guy juiced his way to hundreds of millions of dollars, you have every right to make fun of him. I’m just glad my team didn’t overpay for the overrated juice head. I’m glad his body is breaking down the last several years, its karma really. The only thing more pathetic then Gayrod is Yankees fans telling us to leave him alone.

There is a reason there are so few 3B in the HOF. It is an offensive position, that must be manned by at least an adequate defensive talent or else the net result is negative. It is why so many players, Cabrera for instance move to 1B or the OF. Finding an infielder with pop is rare, and today especially rare.

Sox might be a good match. Semi-hole in a big RF, risky high-upside signing, low dollars per year (which helps out with the luxury tax threshold), decent history of playing the Latin American markets.

No more or less likely than any of the suitors mentioned. Which means, of course, it’s still anyone’s guess.

I have my doubts too with Mayberry Jr. playing 3rd. I guess if they don’t upgrade in the off-season at that position, they will try him at 3rd during Spring Training. Not my preference.

With this pitching staff, they cannot afford to downgrade themselves defensively in the infield. I think it will be a mistake they will regret.

In all seriousness, there are many inside the organization that believe Mayberry Jr. could be an excellent third baseman. I have my doubts…mainly because he is very tall and has never played the position before at a professional level.

The Phillies? This type of signing is not likely. They have never spent major money on a foreign player nor have I ever seen them express interest in the past with these type of moves.

Although, if they signed him, they get younger immediately and can move Victorino in a trade for a 3rd baseman/bullpen/bench help.

I agree with leokitty, though. Marlins seem like the perfect suitor.
