If A-Rod had played for the minimum it wouldn’t have helped the Rangers make better decisions about who they put on the mound. From what Hicks was spending I’m not sure there were any budget restraints.

Well, the Rangers survived A-Rod’s contract and they’ve managed a pair of World Series appearances and new great owners. If this is the precedent Gator, one would think you’d be chomping at the bit for this type of signing!

Correct me if I am wrong; but the last time I looked Hanley Ramairez was the Marlin’s starting shortstop? Why would they entertain signing Reyes who has a history of injuries when they already have a player who has a history of injuries and who is signed through 2014 and plays the same position?

Then again nothing Loria and Sampson does should surprise anyone after they signed Ozzie. Having said that money talk$ and bull $hit walk$. How else can one explain why they are having all these free agent$ come to South Florida.

How in the world can the Marlins afford Reyes and Albert at the same time? If Reyes goes to Miami, he will not be cheap.

Nothing but a leverage ploy. If the fish make an outlandish offer, it’ll be “leaked” so that the Cardinals know what he could get if he threatens to go elsewhere. If they low-ball him, you’ll only hear that the meeting “was productive for both sides” and you’ll never hear another word about it. They can’t draw flies to Marlins games. No way they can afford to pay Pujols. Albert, enjoy the brief vacation in south Florida. Take the kids. The beaches are awesome.

While most all of that is true….nearly every player on the Rangers team that went to the 2010 and 2010 WSs were acquired (drafted, signed, traded for) while Hicks owned the team.

The whole idea of A-Rod-as-an-albatross in Texas is absurd. The guy played baseball just about as well as a human can play it for the Rangers, but one player simply can’t carry a baseball team. It’s just now how the sport works. If Texas had the farm system then that they had now — something that’s less about big budgets and more about good scouts and smart baseball people — and they’d been able to produce a Derek Holland instead of sign a Chan-Ho Park, A-Rod’s and his tenure with the Rangers would be viewed in a completely different light.

Let me break it down for you:

Rangers with A-Rod = Bad
Rangers without A-Rod = Still bad!

Rangers with Tom Hicks = Bad
Rangers without Tom Hicks = Good!

There is considerable evidence that Alex Rodriguez’s contract with Texas did not hamper their ability to acquire complementary talent. It was their poor judgment on pitching, such as paying far too much to Chan Ho Park, that was the problem.

Actually, Rodriguez was worth the money they paid him in terms of both his on-field performance and the value of his presence to ticket and ancillary sales. They got their money’s worth.

The fish have to make a show of this…..even if AP was going leave St. Louis…the contract that it is going to take to land him will not be “fire saleable”. The teams that could “buy” in that scenario are the same ones that would really have the resources to out bid St. Louis right now…and they are all pretty well set at first base. This is a low risk way way to let the folks that will come out to tour the new digs for the first couple home stands in 2012 know that “Hey we tried for the # 1 guy on the market, but he really just wanted to stay with the Cards, Sorry Miami.”

I just can’t get excited about this. Nothing personal, Albert, but really, if the Marlins bought you they’d cripple themselves financially for the length of your contract and beyond. Think the Rangers with A-Roid. I don’t see Scrooge McLoria being that crazy and I don’t see Mr. Family Values (after Joe Paterno, I mean) uprooting his family to move them here.
